This is a clip from a documentary running on HBO called,
"The Greatest Silence- Rape in the Congo"
Not only are these women and girls being gang raped in large numbers, their bodies get mutilated by their assailants by having guns, machetes, tree limbs or whatever shoved into their wombs. Some of them are so badly injured that they do not have bladders anymore and urinate all over themelves uncontrollably. There are barely any resources to help them. The hospitals are full in which it takes some of these women a year to physically recover. Mentally, they never will. The hardest part for me to watch were the parts about the 4 year old girl and the 80 year old woman. On top of all this, the stigma in these cultures is that these "damaged" women are no longer accepted by their husbands or families so they are abandoned, left to raise their children by themselves. They are starving, traumatized and do not know what happiness is. This area of the world is rich because of the diamonds, oil and other natural resources, but the government is so greedy and corrupt they turn a blind eye.
Pass this on- awareness is the first step.
