FATAL CRASH

File Number: 04-10-2965On Monday, October 18, 2004 at approximately 9:00 am, Mobile Police units were responding to 408 South Ann Street in reference to a domestic violence complaint. As the police arrived, the suspect, Joseph Salter (19), was attempting to leave the scene in a black automobile. The vehicle then sped away attempting to elude the police heading north on S. Ann Street. When police officers attempted to stop the vehicle, Salter continued north for approximately six blocks. As the suspect’s vehicle approached Government Street, he accelerated through the intersection striking another vehicle that was traveling westbound on Government Street. Both vehicles overturned onto S. Ann Street just north of Government Street. The suspect was able to exit the vehicle and flee on foot. Officers apprehended him a short time later hiding behind a residence on Ann Street. The driver of the other vehicle, Lanaka Lucas (22), was pronounced dead on the scene. Salter was treated and released at USA Medical Center for his injuries.
