About Me

It was a chilly October evening and the football game was three quarters complete. Her boyfriend stood on the sidelines watching as she engaged the crowd in a chant for the home team. They wore red and white, known for being a local powerhouse in football, they were called the Scarlett Knights. She was proud to be the head-cheerleader but even more proud of the crown that rest on her head that fateful October night. The crown was given to her just an hour earlier during the halftime homecoming ceremonies, she was their queen and her boyfriend was their king. With the cheer complete she turned to glance at her boyfriend as he trotted on to the field for one more quarter on the most perfect of nights. At this point, the game was down to formalities for the Scarlett Knights had put the across town rivals the Panthers into an inescapable abyss, down by 28. She blew him a kiss as he shot her a wave. At that moment she thought, “This is where I want to be forever. This night is perfect.” How eerie she might think those words to be if she still could think the way she once did.Three plays into the third, a shiny disc began to appear in the northern sky and as it approached at a freighting speed, the spectators of the local game began to loose focus on the Scarlet Knights and began contemplating what that giant glow might be. Her boyfriend did not notice for the glowing ball was at his teams back so he ran a play as nothing was happening. The opposing team, became affixed in a dreamlike state and the Scarlett Knights ran right passed them. Her boyfriend spiked the ball as he crossed the goal line, he was alone, celebrating in the end zone for the score he had just made. Suddenly he realized he was not the center of attention as he looked to the left towards the home crowd he noticed their attention was focused behind him. He began to turn, slowly at first but the light was so bright he ended up turning so fast that his momentum nearly jerked him off his feet. That was the most he ever saw of the light because by the time he was around the disc had broken up and a piece now blasted its way into the center of the field. His team began shrieking in high pitch human voices as pieces of the object tore them apart. Most of the Panthers shared the same fate as their opponents. Everyone in the stadium took one deep breath simultaneously as if they were all part of the same organism. There were body parts strewn all around him, yet the boyfriend could not get himself to budge, in fact no one had even thought about moving, it was too much for anyone. Slowly, a green mist began to lift from the impact zone and the once motionless body parts began to move. That’s when the panic began. The crowd rumbled with terror and all began to run for the exits in a futile attempt to flee the devastation that was about to occur. The boyfriend stayed frozen, staring at the green mist, as it awoke his dead teammates. He saw that there was no escape, not for him, so he stood there and let the mist over take him. She heard him scream but could not see him through the mist and the overpowering crowd so she ran in the direction in which she last saw him.She didn‘t flinched as her crown flew off her head as she sprinted towards her king. She saw people she once knew as her friends sprawled upon the field. Some lay still. Others were shivering and screaming, their shrieks not human but that of a monster. It was like the sound of a train halting to a stop coming from the lungs of those she once cheered for. Moving or not, the skin of these new creatures began to turn green, like leaves of a maple in summer. The site and smell of the scene was almost to much and she began to gag as she continued toward her boyfriend. “Where are you. Please tell me where you are!!!”, she choked out as she inhaled more of the mist. It was doing something to her but she didn’t know what, she just coughed and struggled on. She now stood in the end zone, the last place she saw him. She spun around in the mist and saw the panic that was now happening. The Panthers were advancing into the crowd and appeared to be beating and fighting the Scarlett Knight’s fans. She squinted to look at one Panther in particular, the running back, it looked as if he tore the arm off of one of the fans… “No, that can’t be. This isn’t happening. I just….just need to find….him. Everything…..it will be ok.”, she muttered inside her head as she let out another series of coughs. She spun in a circle looking for the love of her life but could not find him. She was about to give up and just lie down when he jumped from the mist a few yards from her.“You’re alive and ok!!”, She scream and ran towards him. If she had only stopped to really look at him she would of seen that this was not the man she once said she would marry. This was not the same boy she had known since second grade. Something new had replaced those green eyes of her lover, something terrible that did not recognize her or anybody else for that matter. What replaced his charming glowing eyes was a hunger, a hunger so intense that nothing could slow it down. The creature took the girl by her hair and pulled her to the side. “What’s wrong!?!” She stammered, noticing too late that his brilliant green eyes were now glowing red with fury. Her head pounded as he pulled her closer. “No, this can’t be, this was a perfect night, why?”, inside her head she begged for all this to stop but deep down she knew that her life was over.He bit down on her right cheek, the same cheek he planted a thousand kisses .., the same cheek he kissed her on in second grade after handing her a bouquet of freshly picked daisies. That was the moment she knew he was for her… so young but it just felt right. It was ironic that this was the same way the monster invited her into her new life. Thinking of this, she had a wry smile as he tore off her cheek. The pain pulsed everywhere but she didn’t even let out a whimper, when he dropped her she just curled up in the fetal position, smiling, trying to act like all of it was just a big dream. She was in shock, how such a perfect night can go so wrong. He let out a cry as she thumped to the ground, it was a shriek of victory, she heard him scream like that so many times before on the field, screaming to triumphs of football. Now, she noticed his voice was distorted too, as if some creature had taken him over and was trying to remember how to use his voice, but it came out scratchy and too deep for the kind boy she once knew. The creature saw the crowd, now to his right, all trying frantically to escape. Fathers were abandoning crying children, wives, and friends as they ran for safety. Mothers pushed sons and daughters out of their way to try to avoid the tearing claws of the creatures. Brothers ran crying, sisters lay still, frightened by the massacre before them, tears streaming down their faces. Friends threw each other into the creatures to avoid their own death. Madness had ensued and our quarterback creature desired more flesh so he too ran to join the frenzy. She heard him screaming as he ran away, it was the sound of a beast running towards a meal. She began to cry. Her head hurt so bad and she started to feel sick. She was crying because her life had been ripped from her, like her check had been torn from her face. It was quick, violent, painful and she knew what was to come next. She knew that the hunger too would take her over, that her beautiful blue eyes would be replaced with those glowing red dots of fury. She knew that her skin would turn a new color as if her whole body was decaying from gangrene. She knew that there would be no more football games, not just for Scarlett Knight fans or for the Panthers. As she lay there fading from one life to the next she began to realize what was happening to the world. Hell had been awoken and the masses of the dead would rise and give a new meaning to life… The wry smile appeared on her face once again as a hint of red entered her eyes.
