Formed in 1996, The Marilyns plays alternative pop, with vocals sung in both Malay and English. Having grown older as a band and moving away from their previous indie-funk fused sound, the band sounds wiser and admits that they are now more comfortable and confident with their songwriting and arrangement. Describing themselves humbly as 'a band which itself was never big nor small in terms of success, but just there. . .as a loyal participant in the Singapore indie scene'.The Marilyns are living proof of the multilayered magic that defines their style as the band is not only physically formed by musicians from previous local groups, but also draw their inspiration from a myriad of international musical influences with anything from indie rock to Brit pop and funk. Quoting Radiohead, The Stone Roses , The Charlatans, Suede and Blur as some of their all-time favourites.Part of The Marilyns' uniqueness perhaps lies in their bilingual musical enterprise. Having originally produced English language songs, the band decided to "get back to their roots" and have thus issued Apa Kabar? Sandiwara which comprises entirely of Malay language originals that "emphasize on social life in Singapore." Each track is a labour of love and a work of art, with particular tracks boasting a crafted storyline in their compositions. The group's free-for-all creative approach be speaks an easy-going but no less dedicated personality that is also evident as the best part about being in a band.
