Sub-Surface was formed in late 2003 when emcees Scripture and RhymeWise dissolved their previous group with fellow emcee Faces. While performing at open mic nights at bars around Fort Wayne, Indiana they met up with DJ Illiana Jonze who was then DeeJaying these same open mic nights. During this time Sub-Surface began work on a 4-Song Demo disc entitled The BoomBox Sampler. Although Illiana Jonze did not do cuts on this recording Sub-Surface began having him DeeJay their live sets.Their 4 Song Demo The BoomBox Sampler was released in July of 2004 to acclaim from both fans and critics alike. Sub-Surface dubbed their sound “BoomBox Hip-Hop†which is hip-hop that harkens back to a time where there was a balance of style AND substance in the music. A time when a variety of topics could be touched, and all could be heard bumping loudly out of boomboxes.During their time performing Sub-Surface’s reputation as an extremely impressive live act continued to grow. In late 2004 Illiana Jonze was added as a full member of the group and Sub-Surface set out to promote The BoomBox Sampler. During 2004 and 2005 Sub-Surface developed a strong Do-It-Yourself attitude and work ethic performing at least a show a month hitting the cities of Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Muncie as well others. Also during 2005 Sub-Surface contributed tracks to a compilation put out by the Underground Coalition. Although still performing, during late 2005 the group slowed down a bit to begin work on what would become their debut full-length album The Others. The Others is the culmination of two years of life experience and an expression of aggressive yet thought provoking hip-hop. In conjunction with the release of The Others Sub-Surface will once again hit the road spreading BoomBox Hip-Hop wherever they go.
