I listened to music and watched TV night and day growing up. It was natural for me to fantasize about being a star. You can't learn to be a star from the media though. You can't really learn much because it's only about selling products. To make matters worse, a court case in the 80's made it clear there are no standards for marketing to children. The flood gates opened and they could tell us anything and everything. The more the TV and the RADIO lied to me, the more bitter I became about hearing what they had to say. It was time for me to make my own standards.
Once upon a time I wanted to by the greatest rapper I ever heard. No longer willing to accept the trash shoved down my throat, I made my own lyrics and my own dialogue over every predatory corporate message I came across. I moved forward with vigor against anyone who dared tell me I was wrong. I used rap to learn and grow and I experienced every bit of dirt, grime, and trash that was blasted at me from the radio, the television and the streets. I saw the anger, the damage, the greed and manipulation behind every message. I was mesmerized by the passion and talent of hundreds I heard. But I was confused to never hear one artist dare to put out rap everyone could enjoy.
I make rap music. I rap. It's my music no matter who says I'm wrong to claim it as my own. The way I choose to claim it is exactly how it is supposed to be. When I rap I'm the little boy sitting in front of the TV begging to see truth. I'm the little boy angry at the radio for inflicting me with toxic waste messages and marketing. I want my music to entertain communities and provide some sort of message that represents the healthy life we all should strive to live. Let's be serious. Rap can be passionate, raw and entertaining without everybody clawing over each other to be the alpha dog.
