recorded alone in a red-lit carpeted cellar equipped with a Roland multi-track, a couple of low-end
microphones, some songs, instruments, and a voice.
all between working a full-time social work job on its last leg after 8 years ...
having to exit the studio in late May, as the walls were literally being knocked down
the Roland was rescued..
between September and Dec. 08, mixing and remixing ensued in an attempt
to alchemically transform ugliness into beauty.
one vocal/guitar track was redone and a double vocal added on another track in
the process.
otherwise, 'East of the East River' is the result of little studio trickery, aside from some reverb and overdubbing.
never straying far from a simple formula: vocal/guitar/harmonica with additional
guitar/s, bass, drums w/organ on two of the tracks
influences: Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Stones, Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Velvets, Neil Young, The Band, Flaming Lips?...always with a touch of the blues in mind and heart...
this is the first release on GRAND CROSS RECORDS....
first solo record since 'Beyond the Ruins of my Mind'
shows will follow with musicians supporting to celebrate the release of

" BEYOND THE RUINS OF MY MIND"
consists of 11 songs by Tim Garrigan, who sings, and plays a variety of instruments on the recording: acoustic and electric guitars, bass, organ, and percussion.
The songs were recorded and mixed by Charles Burst in NYC in a total of 8 days between late 2003 and early 2004.
Garrigan benefitted from the help of Burst, at the time, a member of the NYC band The Occassion, who was generous enough to play drums, percussion, and bass on a number of tracks, and recruited several friends, including, Marlon Sporer, also of The Occasion, who played bass on several tracks; and Jim D'amico, who played bass or keys on many of the tracks. Garrigan also recruited Dianna Martin for harmony vocals, Britta Steiner, on violin, at that time, a member of Edison Woods, for several tracks, and Hank Shteamer, of Stay Fucked, who played drums on several tracks.
The songs span a range of styles from folk, country-rock, rock-n-roll, dirge waltz, to high-energy blues rock – all containing lyrics of strong poetic quality.
From the joyful yet yearning country-rock of the first song “Oh, Baby it’s You (Can’t You See)†to the pastoral chord movements of the “personal is political†confessional of “History,†to the urban folk-rock of “Mama and Papa†with its Jerry Garcia-like guitar work, to the wistful waltz of “It All Comes Back to You,†to the reflective, transcendental spirit of the title track “Ruins of my Mindâ€; … to the bar-rock howl of “Rock-n-Roll Shuffle,†the urgent call for solidarity in “Let’s Get Along,†“Red Balloonâ€â€™s playful and hypnotic violin/guitar passages, the minimalistic fast-paced blues sound of “Remember Whenâ€; … to “Burning Starâ€â€™s haunting ode to dreamers, to “Maybe, I’ll See You Tomorrowâ€â€™s quizzical lament on fading love and friendship; … this set of songs and performances explores a rich variety of musical expressions, influences, and moods.
Influences: Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, Leonard Cohen, Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, The Beatles, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground, Nico, Skip James, Folk Anthology, Jimmy Reed, The Stooges, Woody Guthrie, Jimmie Rodgers, Billie Holliday, Thelonious Monk, The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Neil Young, Gram Parsons, Satie, Bach, Mozart, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Marianne Faithful, Patti Smith.. onto infinity.. friends..family..musicians I've worked with... new music that is good...
