................I gripped the pillow tightly and burrowed my head deep into it. I hoped it would catch my tears and when I lifted my head it would all be a dream. But when I lifted my head there was only him, my father, swaggering in like a cock in a hen house. “Whaaaaaat are you crying about?” he said in a patronizing tone, knowing damn well what I was crying about. “I’ll give you something to cry about ” he yelled “You already did ” I screamed with my big boy voice. I was nine years old and today was the day before my birthday.I lived in the country with the closest neighbor being a mile away and the closet kid my age being 5 miles away. Out there on the hill my only friends were my whylie cats. They were my best friends and the only real source of entertainment I had growing up. Always running here and there, it was great fun to catch and tease them. I had friends at school, but they where only school friends because every one lived in town, and I was out of town. When I was able to play with friends it was rare and I always tried to get the most awesome play time in I could.. The day before my birthday was one such day, a great day. My friend was going to pick me up at home, Which was no small feet. The road up the hill was long and argues for most cars, and I would have to walk down the mile and half road to the bottom to be picked up on most occasions. But not on this day, the day before my birthday.My friend and his mother arrived early to pick me up. “Excellent More play time ”I thought. We got to his house and I was overwhelmed with all the spectacular things he had. Not only did he have a rope swing, but a rope swing that had a little lake under it that we could jump in. It’s amazing how much fun can be had with a just a rope, a tree, and a small pool of water. With our knees sufficiently scraped and our finger nails filled to the maximum with dirt we heard a “ok boys, time to take Christopher home” Miss Hardy always had away of ending our fun at the worst moment. We drove the long hard road home and up the mountain to the top where my father was waiting. I said my good byes to my friend, and hello to my dad. He was drinking a beer, which I hadn’t seen him do since I was in diapers. He was in very good spirits and greeted me warmly none the less and asked how my play day was. I told him I had fun and wished I could have played longer. “That’s how it goes.” he said as he turned away and I walked off to sneak up on my favorite cat Garfield. He was the whilyest of them all and it was very rare to find him napping. What a great day I thought. As I snuck up on him my father yelled “No, no, boy, don’t touch him, he’s got lead poisoning, “GWAH HA HA HA.” I didn’t under stand. As I walked closer my dad continued “They all do GWAH HA HA HA” I looked up and saw that all my cats were sleeping, Garfield, Thor, Gizmo, Night, Pongo, and Chester, all of them were sleeping. As I inched closer to Garfield I saw a pool of blood building up underneath him. I looked back at my dad with tears in my eyes and saw his gun half hazardly thrown on to the trunk of his old Honda . Then I realized what he had done. I cried out loud and hard running into the house and grabbed my pillow. I had never cried so hard in my life. I could still hear my dad laughing as he came in. “Whaaaaaat are you crying about?” he said in a patronizing tone, knowing damn well what I was crying about. “I’ll give you something to cry about ” he shouted. “You already did ” I screamed with my big boy voice. Then I heard a loud slap and my eyes went shut. When I opened them I was on the ground and my face stung. This was the day my best friends lied dead on my front yard. This was the day I lost my father... This was the day I stopped crying... This was the day before my 10th birthday... Happy birthday to me...
