As they unplugged their instruments, and the doors prematurely closed on their Ibiza club night for the last time, Alex Larke, and his band, X, knew that distant dream was gone. Gone too was the strangulated apathy, the mistrust and the deceit. The band was over for good. This was September 2002, and Alex landed with a bump back on British soil.Alex was a gifted front man, lyricist and vocalist, but he was never a musician. His knowledge of three guitar chords wouldn’t get him too far, unless he wanted to go down the punk route, yet the whole disaster, that was the band, left a very bad taste in the mouth. There was no other option, in his mind, but to go solo, but without any musical knowledge it was going to be a monumental task. Someone once said that ‘when it is dark enough, you can see the stars’. Yeah, he could see them, but were so very far away.By chance, a call from an old friend in Sunderland, in north-east England, offering him a flat to look after for a few months, proved to be pivotal. Armed with a cheap bass, a guitar, a computer and a tutoring keyboard, Alex hauled himself up from his familiar leafy Hertfordshire surroundings to the gritty inner city. He turned to page one of the ‘Guitar Handbook’ and settled down for the winter.Come spring, Alex had a handful of simple, yet tuneful songs to his name. Electronic beats fused with guitar licks, synths and soothing strings; lilting harmonies flowing over catchy pop choruses. This was certainly the start of something. He knew he had made the right choice by shedding the shackles of the confines of his former band. This new music had a special quality that deserved to be shared. This was a rebirth. A resurrection. As time has progressed, so has his ability to craft beautiful, yet gritty songs. Tales of deceit, of love won and lost, and calls for insurrection – swirling melodies, harmonies and beats: the fundamentals of the distinctiveness of the ‘Alex The Great’ sound. The success of this music has lead to an exceptional fan base for a self-promoted, unsigned artist. His MySpace page has seen countless fans countrywide clamouring for the music, anticipating the day an album will be released. Word of the stunning live performances that encapsulate the sexy, charismatic swagger of the man dubbed the “modern day Mick Jaggerâ€, has quickly spread.2009 looks set to be an eventful year, working with the great Cut La Roc and appearing on his album, Larger Than Life, alongside Snow Patrol's lead singer, Gary Lightbody.
