About Me

music took over my life when i was around 9; there had been warnings prior, but the violin took a hold of my being then, with later the piano, the church organ, conducting, and above all, writing music. all of these activities have taught me, over time, that they are actually a manifistation of the most astonishing living, soulfulness - the extraordinary range and downright beauty of people i have met through this living leaves me quite humble. i have only started in this living and relish its ongoing...through my teaching (at CalArts; and the collective i have started with my friends - inauthentica), performing, rehearsing, thinking... another aspect of my creativity is writing, mostly poetry these days. perhaps poetry has a lot in common with musical composition: for me it is musical composition with its relationship to creativity (meaning, lyric impulse, sonic sensibility) seen from the other side.

good heavens, i don't know. all the best friends i have met and who have done important and generous things for me have always appeared seemingly unexpectedly. if i had a choice of meeting someone from the past (lovely fantasy, no?) top of my list would be monteverdi, a 17th century writer of poetic music and who must have been one of those great cranky and passionate characters! i mean read those letters he wrote...
