About Me

I guess I would have to say that I'm a complicated guy that comes in a simple package. There are so many wrong assumptions that people make about me when they look at me that when they finally start to get to know me as a person, as opposed the fictional portrait that they have painted in their heads, they're very surprised. Contrary to popular belief, I am NOT White! To the government, I am Hispanic. To my acquaintances, I am Mexican-American. To my classmates, I am Chicano. But to my friends and family, I'm just Marv. I'm actually from East Los, born and raised believe it or not. Another important thing about me is that I'm constantly being accused of caring too much about others and putting them before myself. Oh well, what can I say? I guess I've been cursed with a good heart in this individualistic, materialistic, late-capitalist society. I have a simple saying for how I want to live my life: When a president dies, kings and emperors will come to the funeral. When I die, I want my friends and family to come. I guess it's as simple as that and I will never compromise that for as long as I live. I just don't believe in putting myself above others by flaunting my privileged education and accomplishments over their heads because it's that kind of elitist mentality that is the true root of all the problems facing society today, more than the systematic, institutionalized racism and discrimination. But hey, don't peg me as such a serious guy, I actually like to have fun just like everyone else...DOYERS!!! It's all about the Blue Crew up in the city of angels!
I also follow boxing religiously (C'mon Oscar! Hometown ICON representing East Los right here!)
and I'm the hugest Mexican Green Bay Packers fan since before everyone jumped on the bandwagon...Go Brett Favre! That's my homie right there

Music:

Hard rock acts like Korn, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, as well as the one and only METAL LORDS Metallica, and, of course, Rage Against the Machine. These days, however, I find myself listening to anything from country to Mozart. I LOVE adult contempo. singer/songwriters like U2, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sarah McLachlan, The Cure, Dido, and Shakira for the simple, yet powerful truths about life that they sing about. I also like Classic Rock like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Hendrix, Santana, CCR, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd among others.

Movies:

My favorite movie of all-time is definitely Forrest Gump. After that, there are so many others...The Lion King, Backdraft (the very best firefighter movie of all-time), The Last of the Mohicans, Dick Tracy, Terminator 2, Only the Strong, Carlito's Way, Apollo 13, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, L.A. Confidential, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Theres' Something About Mary, The Boy Who Could Fly, Back to the Future Trilogy, All the ROCKY movies, Anything to do with SUPERMAN, Spider-man1 & 2, The Sandlot, High Noon, Heat, Enemy of the State, Menace II Society, Speed, Bloodsport, Duel, Saving Private Ryan, The Pianist, The Crow, Almost Famous, As Good As It Gets, Glory, Shawshank Redemption, The Last Samurai, The Matrix Trilogy, Harry Potter movies...I think that's it.

Television:

SMALLVILLE!!! Next Question. I also watch, as required by law, the Simpsons. I guess I watch other shows as well like Grey's Anatomy, King of the Hill, Curb Your Enthusiasm, American Family re-runs on PBS. I'm also re-watching shows like Who's the Boss?, The Wonder Years, Boy Meets World, Seinfeld, Spin City, Family Matters, and a whole lot of CNN and all the other major news channels.

Books:

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Les Miserables, The Grapes of Wrath, The Great Gatsby, Jane Eyre, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, Dreams of the Centaur, Always Running, Drink Cultura, Becoming Mexican-American, Savage Inequalities
