Mother Goose originated from Dunedin in November 1975. Early in 1976 the group relocated to Auckland, and following in the footsteps of Split Enz, burst on to the scene with a strong theatrical show, taking bizarre appearances to absurd lengths. On stage, some of their set pieces were hilarious first time around. Not so funny on the second occasion, mildly amusing on the third and plain boring thereafter.
By April 1976, Mother Goose had exhausted their appeal in Auckland and so they hit the pub circuit with better success. In October they headed across to Australia and repeated the same old stuff for the Queenslanders. Following that they headed to Melbourne where they impressed Mushroom Records enough to score a recording contract.
In September 1977, their first album Stuffed was released.
