Jason Phelps first developed his musical chops playing classical piano as a child. He played both organ and piano in his church. Realizing his love for music, Jason majored in Jazz and Improvisational Studies at University of Michigan. During his time in college, the electric bass became his primary instrument. He began to focus on playing bass in many different styles, including jazz, R&B, gospel, funk, soul, hip-hop, and pop.
Jason has performed with the University of Michigan Gospel Chorale, Latin Jazz Ensemble, and Big Band. During his time in college, he was trained in jazz improvisation by Detroit area bassists Marion Hayden and Paul Keller. He has also studied with the legendary Al Turner - one of the most recorded session bass players in the world.
Jason Phelps has been blessed to perform with many extremely talented musicians over the years. He has played bass with the bands Blue Maize, Father Time, and Funktelligence, as well as playing in the house band for Pickford Live Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Jason has performed with members of groups such as Arrested Development, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Marcus Miller band, Parliament Funkadelic, the Gospel Music Workshop of America, the Roy Ayers band, and more. He has been musical director and arranger for bands throughout Detroit area, as well as theater productions. He has also played in studio sessions in Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, and Tokyo.
Jason is currently working as a freelance musician in the Detroit area, while developing a production team known as The Syndicate. He his touring with Muse Recordings, supporting the album "Marc's Project". You can also find Jason playing piano at worship services for his church, Community Church of God.
