Everything is changing. In rap music, Hip-Hop culture, the world…period.
But, evidently not enough for RasRok. Far beyond your average rapper, listener or fan RasRok’s hunger for change and versatility in Hip-Hop shines brightly through his music. Beginning his music career as an avid listener RasRok, started his rap career doing just that…listening. Since his birth in 1984, he was exposed to many genres of music. Though rap stood out as his favorite he was no stranger to any form of 80’s music, be it Rap, Rock, New-Wave, Pop, Dance, R&B, Jazz, Reggae, RasRok was spared nothing. Both parents were also heavily into 70’s Soul and Classic Jazz. The son of two addicts in recovery, life started out fairly rough for the future musical enthusiasts. An only child to his mother and the youngest from his father, he grew up without any siblings near his age. With strong-willed and goal oriented parents, early on he didn’t get a lot of the parental attention most of us long for. But, as he grew music and art in general began to fill that void. His father exposed him to a wide gambit of music from Sade to Genesis, from Earth, Wind and Fire to Too Short, from Eric B. and Rakim to Anita Baker, and many others. While growing RasRok became more intrigued by Hip-Hop culture and it’s elements, increasingly Rap and Graffiti. He started to take steps toward music professionally but, for now, he was content to freestyle and battle for his respect. In 1997 he became a part of a SouthSide Chicago group called I.C.U., consisting of 5 underground Chicago MC’s and 1 producer, from here he further divulged into Chicago’s underground hip-hop scene. Being exposed to the battles, performances and unruly crowds helped to set him on the path he follows to this day.Fed up with the “hurry-up and waitâ€, process of the industry he started his own label with manager, Deandre “Dreezy†Sanders, Cold City Records, LLC. Taking the role of Vice-President, RasRok officially started his professional career. Though not a powerhouse, with 3 releases in 4 years Cold City is shaping up into a force to be reckoned. Releasing Full Contact: Episode 1 in the summer of ’03, Cold City introduced a roster of roughly 3 rappers and 1 producer. Since then the roster has dwindled to RasRok only…but he doesn’t seem bothered in the slightest. Last springs “Learning 2 Flyâ€, garnered citywide acclaim and respect for the artist and his label. Depending on only 2 producers and his own writing skill RasRok crafted a versatile and potent mixtape, peppered with political and social commentary along with a helping of the dark, street elements ever present in his city. Never one to be stagnate, since L2F’s spring release last year RasRok has stayed busy assembling a group project based in Texas, continuously recorded standout tracks for his next project and is secretly crafting a collaboration between him and one of Chicago’s production elite.Since stepping into the professional arena of music RasRok has brushed shoulders with some of his cities most well known subjects. Always modest and never a namedropper, you’d never know who or what RasRok has in store. Entering 107.5 WGCI (Chicago and the Midwest’s biggest radio station)’s “Chicago Idol†he performed in front of the likes of Common, Kanye, Syleena Johnson and Chicago production legend No I.D. Though he didn’t win, the support of the crowd and criticism from legends made the experience well worth it. Additionally him and producer Prolyfic (Lupe Fiasco’s, “Food and Liquorâ€, Roc-A-Fella’s “Dream Team†Album) have been friends since their I.C.U. days… but that’s on the low though. With over 9 years recording professionally under his belt, RasRok has seen and experienced multitudes since his early days of writing and performing. From group beginnings and break-up, shady producers, out of town trips, to lost loved ones. Everything has changed but RasRok perseveres and adjusts.I edited my profile with Thomas Myspace Editor V4.4 (www.strikefile.com/myspace)!-START Block to Place Custom Banner at Top of Page-!
