WHOEVER SAID SURRENDER IS ROMANITIC HAD A MAJOR PROBLEM
"Let's look briefly at current popular role models for women in love as personified by contemporary fairy tales, which all our children know by heart.
Ariel, the LIttle Mermaid, aspires to "greater things" and ends up with a stupid prince, who "loved whoever had that 'voice,'" no matter how wonderful Ariel was. For this she gives up her world, her family, her fins.
Belle, in Beauty and the Beast, aspires to "greater things" and ends up with a rotten (oh, maybe he'll change...) prince who at first worked on being nice to her only to break a curse. Okay, Okay, so he came around-but would Prince Handsome have hung around that long for a witch? I hardly think so. For this she gave up her plans and dreams and journeying into the world.
I would have been happier had she been a part of his siccessful spiritual transformation, patted him on the head, and gave him her forwarding address at the university.
In Aladdin, the princess also gives up her dreams of venturing into the world, independently, when her beggar-turned-prince takes her off on a magic carpet. He's going to show her the world-of course, that he's never seen it himself is irrelevant.
If you're thinking these "fairy tales" do not apply to real life, think again! Remember, billions of girls and boys who see these films are going to grow up believing this romantic nonsense and dreaming dreams that could later turn into nightmares"(Dr. Laura Schlessinger).http://www.myprofilepimp.com/myspace_layout_ho
