We have a funny way of viewing guns. We hear someone has a knife and we're scared. We hear someone has a gun and we freeze. It's as if a gun doesn't deliver a bullet, but instant death. What is a gun except a really efficient knife? A gun sends a blade through your body. Sure it's shaped rather differently, and causes different kinds of wounds from different distances, but what a gun does is shoot a bullet and what a bullet does is cut and brake. Funny how somehow we don't think of guns as causing wounds, but as simply causing death. Look at movies. When someone is shot, in most instances anyway, that person drops. The victim falls down and is dead. Now obviously this isn't always the case - there are plenty of times when people get wounded only. On average, though, a gun shot means death. It's just funny to me how a gun becomes something so exceptionally threatening and different. You can end a movie with the sound of a gunshot and the audience won't hear an injury, the audience will hear a death. It's just an inference . . . I wonder what makes us think that way? Is it the distance? Is it how, standing from far away, a little trigger can be pulled and a person drops down, presumably dead? Is it just the ease with which a gun can bring death? It's like pulling the trigger is looking down from the clouds and hurling a lightening bolt. I guess it just seems too different from a punch or a knife wound because of the distance. Firing a gun doesn't involved physically inflicting a wound with the shooter's own hand, up-close and personal. It's just different. A gun is a fancy knife. Yet when someone points a gun at another person, somehow it's just staring in the face of death. We people are so weird in how we think . . .
