About Me

I was born and raised in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
At 17, I moved with my parents to Kansas, completed high school and initiated my interest in photography by learning to develop and print film in a community college course.
I'm mostly a self-taught artist who has never studied art formally.
I relocated to Chicago in 1997 to pursue an art career and within a year I began exhibiting my work professionally, beginning at the Around The Coyote Arts Festival.
I now live and work in Minneapolis, where I had my first solo show, Domestica, at the Flatland Gallery in 2002. Since then, my artwork has been shown at various galleries and spaces, such as Intermedia Arts, Rogue Buddha Gallery and Outsiders And Others Gallery.
As well in 2002, I began performing as Spicarela in Dykes Do Drag at the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater, where I spent three years as part of the ensemble cast. I have also performed drag at shows like Lip Service, Diva Riot and Genderblur.
In Dykes Do Drag, I eventually became in charge of the show's promotional design which led to other work as a freelance graphic designer. Some of my clients have included Outward Spiral Theatre Company, Minnesota Fringe Festival and Hijack.
I curated my first exhibit as part of the panel of the 2004 Visible Fringe Festival, of which I was one of the original exhibiting artists.
Also in 2004, I contributed a spanish version of the song "I'm Taking Your Stuff" to the Shari Elf Tribute Album.
The following year I released Demonstrative, a collection of electronic music I wrote and recorded while living in Kansas.
My first formal choreographic work, Perro (a collaboration with Megan Mayer), premiered at the Walker Art Center's Choreographers' Evening towards the end of 2005.
My subsequent new performances have been featured at the 9x22 Dance Lab, the James Ballentine VFW Hall and Patrick's Cabaret.
At the start of 2007, I joined the local homocore punk band Faggot as one of their rotating troupe of back-up dancers. We've performed at venues like the 7th Street Entry, Ground Zero and the Soap Factory.
I debuted Soltero, my first full stage show production (combining performance, music, art, and video), in mid-2007 at the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater.
My first collaboration with the avant-garde music outfit Purest Spiritual Pigs yielded the piece Olvidame, which premiered in the stage show Shreds and later was featured in my second appearance at Choreographers' Evening in 2007.

My Interests

I live for modern art, so I love going to museum and gallery openings, as well as performances (especially if it's one of my friends' work.) I like to walk a lot too. One of my favourite things to do is to walk around Lake Calhoun during the summer. I also love to eat and there's quite a few interesting places to dine at here in Minneapolis. Hanging out with my friends is probably what I do most frequently... since we all enjoy a good cocktail here and then. I like to go to the Caterpillar Lounge and the 19, mostly. Every once in a while I enjoy a bit of bowling (I'm NOT athletic and this is the only "sport" I'm actually kind of good at.) Going to concerts is also high on my list. There's a great local music scene here, so there's plenty of top notch shows to go see at any time during the week. And the older I get, unfortunately, the more I enjoy a good night's sleep.

I'd like to meet:
