"It is the music of the hustler, of the feverishly active spectator; of the sky-scraper and the grain elevator."
-The Thunderer, March 1913 (on the subject of Ragtime music)Although more than 90 years old, this review could easily have been written about the self-proclaimed "honky-tonk ragtime blues" man, Carlton James.
Childhood spent between Detroit, Michigan and Hernando County, Florida, Carlton has played through several genres of music (including heavy-metal, punk, and country) in order to find what seems to be his calling in the soulful rhythms of New Orleans street music. His unique take on fingerstyle blues guitar is complimented by his baritone drawl, and pleasantly accented by yodels, yips, and whoops.
Although a pleasure to hear Carlton James as a solo act, the number of band members swells to include not only but occasionally banjo, pedal steel, back-up vocals, bass, and percussion.
Accessable, hard-working, and honest, Carlton James and Co is a solid and foot-stomping excuse to go out honky-tonkin'.
