Well, I grew up in a small community in Texas called Tarkington. It wasn't even a town, it was basically a community based on a school district. It was about an hour away from my reservation, the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas. My great uncle was our chief for over 58 years and memories still abound of him and his wisdom which still guide me. My great-grandfather was a tribal leader on our Tribal Council and now my brother follows in his footsteps by serving on the Council now. My parents retired from their jobs and now work for the tribe in various capacities. The rez is always home. I loved it. Then after I did my time at Baylor (Sic'em Bears!!!), I worked back at my old school district for a year at the middle school. Then I realized that I wanted to try something bigger so I packed a suitcase and moved to New York with no job or apartment. It was the scariest and toughest thing that I went through, to try to make it and survive in New York, I wouldn't give up that struggle for nothing. Broadway was my escape and now I was closer to it, and I tried to experience as much of it as I could. Now I work in the theatre industry. It's a nonprofit organization which I first volunteered for and then eventually got a job with them after being dubbed "the volunteer who wouldn't go away so they gave me a job." More than six years later, I'm still loving my job. I don't do too much else except for some tennis every now and then and, of course, a lot of volleyball. I began playing volleyball over three years ago here in the city through one of the leagues and it just got a little bit more obsessive for me, but I have not only loved learning and playing the game of volleyball, but I have been privileged enough to meet some amazing and dynamic people. They are my "urban tribe" and something I can turn to for anything.
