About Me

Urban Juju Poet. West African Ballet Dancer. Performance Artist. Art Educator.
This award winning author of The Revenge of Dandelions has been moving audiences with her original poetry since 1997. Abandoning her honors degree from UMBC in Mechanical Engineering, she has not looked back with a fulfilling journey as a leader in Baltimore's new independent art movement. Olu Butterfly is creative director of BlackOut Studios where she co-produces Organic Soul Tuesdays and consults for the African-American Heritage Festival (1 of Bmore's biggest). She is co-founding director of Poetry for the People Baltimore, a community organization of renegade brilliant poet activists that produces several staple events including Ladies Verse, Battle uv da Skoolz Intercollegiate poetry slam, and The People's Poetry Awards. Olu Butterfly tours the world with Fertile Ground, Sankofa Dance Theater, as well as independently. She has been an international ambassador artist in residence in Dakar, Senegal and Rotterdam, NL. Ms. Butterfly has performed in nightclubs and colleges from New York to Atlanta to L.A. to the UK to Paris. Born in Nigeria, she has called St. Croix VI, Baltimore, Philly, and D.C. her home. Not pursuing empty hootin & hollerin, she is enjoying attention as a one of a kind artist and connecting with brilliant young people around art.
Sweet Mama Stringbean is working on an album entitled Collard Greens From Twinkies with producer Joel Mills and an afrofantasy book collaboration with visual artists Darian Robbins and John Ashford entitled Jupiter Memoirs.
