Eddie Star's prolific past catches up with the present as he continues to claim his place in rock'n'roll infamy. With the release of Informal Deviance, the stunning debut from his new band Joybox, as well as the reissue of his first solo album, Star proves his effusive, electric, "shock me" riffs and lyrical candor still provoke and inspire.
Star began his musical career at age 17 when he signed with producer Arthur G. Wright's (Chuck Berry, The Jackson 5, The Pips) NSP Records, Inc. His self-titled debut was a raunchy blend of rock'n'roll and punk in the tradition of such bands as The Sex Pistols, Joan Jett and Lou Reed, all of whom first influenced the London, Ontario, native to pick up a guitar.
It was during those recording sessions that The Zero Effect came into existence. Formed with Los Angeles guitarist Kelly Charles, Eddie Star & The Zero Effect toured non-stop, opening for bands including the legendary SST Recording country punks Blood on the Saddle, Media Blitz and Tuesday's Waiting.
Eddie Star & The Zero Effect disbanded in 1999 following their epic swan-song performance at the legendary Whisky a Go Go. It was during this time that Star and Bob Mars (Tom Morello, Church of Mars) began working together. Over the next two years they collaborated on more than 30 songs that would become the cornerstone of Joybox.
Star has added the additional title of executive producer to his resume of credits by producing tracks for Andi Tomlinson of the noted Austin, Texas, band The Jubilettes, as well as New York City vocalist Philip Paul Kelly. Wanting to expand his vision and artistic scope, he created Monroe Entertainment Records Group -- a forward-thinking, fiercely independent enterprise -- with friend, mentor and music-industry veteran Gary Monroe.
In addition to his musical career, Star has appeared on such television shows as The Bronx Zoo with Ed Asner, Aaron Spelling's Nightingales and the ABC-TV movie When We Were Young.
To endure and maintain relevancy after nearly two decades is rare. It takes creativity, vision and a formidable and unwavering conviction. Simply put, it takes talent. Star is not seeking the limelight; he is the limelight.
