About Me

Born in Caracas Venezuela,The first instrument i learned how to play was the venezuelan cuatro (which i learned from the grandmaster of them all...Hernan Gamboa my father) I joined his chorus which at the beginning i was one of the lead singers but once he recorded a cd called Tributo (tribute)which had all the venezuelan rhytms afterwards...i started listening to the percussive material, and first instrument i picked up percussively was the venezuelan maracas (which is not easy to play at all believe me).And then i started going to the concerts that were promoting the cdsand i studied the percussionist (which was Archie Pena)and i really liked what he did what with the calypso and the merengue caraqueno and the fulia and the gaita and the joropo estribillo and bambuco..so once i started learning i went to the second concert which was in orlando and while they were doing the sound test and set up i started playing with the bongos and archie was going like "hey hernan he's pretty good he should get into percussion"so i did!so at first it was venezuelan music...up until later on they game me a pair of LP bongos..so then later on i started listening to salsa and boleros and bachata...you know some of the genres that include the bongos.and all of that i learned it by ear;no one really sat down with me repeatedly and said to me "this is how u play bolero bachata salsa son guaganco"i picked it up like that.so years later then i startes listening to other music including the calypsos and stuff then later on i bought an LP torpedo so i started practicing salsa merengue venezolano and dominicano.then later on i got a cowbell and started learning accents and rhythms then a conga which has worked out beautifully then djembe awesomeness as well..then mandolin then bass..now i have a bombo..and all of this i learned by ear like i mentioned. For now I've worked with Hernan Gamboa,Jaime Torres, and Juan Carlos Salazar, and Federico Britos.I have shared the stage with Hernan Gamboa,Gabriel Vivas,Carlomagno Araya and Federico Britos. The only reason why im a multi musician is because it's a good way to get around as a musician if you have the right contacts or even then if you know how to sell and expose yourself as a musician. The only thing is that i don't know how to read music yet but i get the material right away ! RoJo G
