About Me

The band:
Ricky met Mark nearly ten years ago at a party where Mark saved him from being eaten by his own facial hair and since then they have spent most of that time playing in bands together of one kind or another, often resulting in certain catastrophe. Eventually, after a chance encounter, they added Danny Breiner, who had spent much of that time hiding in a mental institution known only as "GA Tech". Realizing the band now had talent in it, and that Ricky and Mark's guitars could not be heard over the warlike pounding of Danny's kit, the trio decided to put together a band and an EP...
I know you'll enjoy it. The disc is a 5-song EP with these songs:
1. thursday's child
2. perfect
3. aj's blues
4. too late for promises
5. the phoenix layover
The Blue Stone Society plays blues-based rock with influences of country, ska, funk, americana, and much more. The songs are perpetually morphing -- come out to a show and see how we change the songs very often. I [Mark] have the privilege of playing with two fantastic musicians, and they have the privilege of being able to bask in my personal glow, so you see, it's a give-and-take relationship. We're out playing shows (hopefully more and more consistently as time goes on), and we want you all to come out and get rocked and funked up. The plan is to hit the studio next year and record a full-length album. Feel free to leave comments, good or bad, but leave more good than bad. We love hearing from you all, especially you -- and you know who you are.
Danny:
Danny Breiner is a native of the ATL, has an Industrial Engineering degree from the GA Tech and a cool-ass job with Mizuno. His day job helps him work to fulfill his lifelong dream of owning every snare known to man. Danny has been the drummer/percussionist for many local bands over the years, but finally found a place anchoring the Blue Stone Society. (It was also him who suggested we make the subtle name change from The Blue Ball Society to our current moniker, because it doesn't apply to him, even though it is still appropriate for the other two guys).
When not playing drums to vent his inner frustration due to his failure at the 2004 Rochambeau (Rock-Paper-Scissors) World Championship (Damn you Patrick Swayze!!), Danny is a big baseball and Atlanta Braves fan as well as an encyclopedia of useless musical knowledge. (I mean really, who else knows that it was Jeff Pilson who played Bass for Steel Dragon in the movie Rockstar -- well, I guess everyone now).
Danny is a true musicians drummer and his passion for the instrument and music is matched only by his passionate hatred for Stephen Jenkins (... and Hugh Jackman... naturally). Behind the kit, Danny draws his inspiration from the likes of Neil Peart (wow, that's a shocker), Stewart Copeland, Carter Beauford, Danny Carey, Max Roach, Ed Toth, Animal and some guy with the goofy name of Buddy.
When not on the road, Danny likes to attempt to break the world record for most concerts attended by a broke person in a lifetime. Otherwise, he enjoys spending some quite time at home with his best girl (or six), a chihuahua, and a psychotic, gender confused male cockatiel named Zoe.
Ricky:
Ricky Burdette is originally from Fairburn, GA and currently resides in Newnan, GA with his lovely wife Amanda and their three cats. Ricky has either sang, played guitar, or played bass (sometimes a combination of two or even all three) in bands off and on since the age of fourteen, with styles ranging from grunge to experimental (looking back, that one was pretty much just crap) to acoustic rock to punk to hard rock/metal. Despite batting .360 in the minors and being a decent decathlete, Ricky left baseball and his Olympic dreams in order to fulfill his true longing: to become an overweight chainsmoker who, when not playing music, enjoys writing music, listening to music, reading, sports based video games (if it's a real sport, that is--no cricket, polo, or soccer), growing facial hair, bad puns, and devouring the souls of the weak (especially little kids--they're like the veal of souls).
Chanse:
Chanse is an enigma. Deal with it.
Mark:
M is for music. And Mark. And moustaches!

Band Members: Mark Phelps & the Blue Stone Society is comprised of Danny Breiner (drums/percussion/vocals), Ricky Burdette (guitar/bass/vocals), and Mark Phelps (vocals/bass/guitar), and we are currently adding a bass player, Chanse Horton, to the group. Maybe we'll have the occasional guest.
The EP features Danny Breiner on drums, Alice Ann Robertson on the cello, Pete Orenstein on piano/organ, and Ryan Strickland on guitar. I'll try to get some of those guys out for gigs someday. Ben Ramsey played the "carrying stuff and taking pictures" as well. The EP was engineered by Chuck Jopski at Summerhouse Sound and mastered by Brad Blackwood for Euphonic Masters.
The Full-length, titled Our Day Has Yet to Come (due out soon!) features the band plus Pete Orenstein on keys, Steve Cunningham on lap steel and more, Alice Ann Robertson on cello, Bain Mattox on banjo/accordion/mandolin, Dave Cunningham on saxophone, and Greg Hammontree on trumpet. Our Day Has Yet to Come has been engineering by Charles Clifton for Red Room Recording and is set to be mastered by Rodney Mills for Rodney Mills Masterhouse.
Influences: Everything! we're such music nerds. Come to a show and you'll see what we mean.
Sounds Like: Not really sure, but on our presskit it says that we sound like a mix of Eric Clapton, G. Love, and Tom Waits. I think that's accurate. Maybe some Black Keys too, just 'cause they're fantastic. On that same note, Aretha Franklin too. Yeah, we sound like her.

the Stagger Lee mythos

I've become somewhat obsessed lately with the Stagger Lee (sometimes referred to as Stack O'Lee or other variations) mythos.  It's a murder story passed down by many blues generations about Lee S...
