I'd like to meet:
Toyia T. Taylor, “Triple T,†possesses the originality of a young Nikki Giovanni and the eclectic energy of Nina Simone. Native of Seattle with deep Louisiana roots, her words reflect the soul of a warrior.
As a performance artist, Toyia’s accomplishments are notable. Her dynamic voice and writing skills won her the title of Miss District of Columbia, advancing her to the Miss America Pageant. During the competition, she received accolades for Best Interview and Talent. As the first black woman to do oratory at the Miss America Pageant, her original oratory, Wake Up, pushed the envelope by addressing the state of today’s youth and the lack of community involvement.
Onstage this soul seeker transforms into a force of conviction and movement. Known for powerful oratory, spoken word and drama workshops she’s shared stages with acclaimed leaders, Kweisi Mfume, Bill Cosby, Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael), Octavia Butler, Benjamin Chavis-Muhammed, Myrlie Evers-Williams, Saul Williams and Nikki Giovanni.
Residing in Brooklyn, New York, Toyia constantly seeks avant garde ways to paint life. She was featured in the 35th Anniversary Limited Edition of Interview Magazine. She has also appeared in an American Cancer Society commercial with Danny Glover, Sex in the City and the daytime soap opera All My Children. Dedicated to community service and the performing arts, she works with several national and local organizations: Perry Player’s Theater Company, Youth Speaks, Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts, Harlem School of the Arts, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, National Society of Black Engineers, National Black Child Development Institute, Professional Performing Arts School, Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center, Malcolm X Grassroots and Creative Outlet.
