Perhaps it seems ludicrous, but I sometimes thank God for letting me grow up in Galata (a thriving town of 15 in north-central Montana). With no more than my brother Chris and a few great friends to hang-out with, I had plenty of time to find hobbies that truly represent me. The one activity that came easiest was playing bass. It sure as hell wasnt my jump shot. They really need a developmental league for bass players from Montana that aspire to play in Europe, the ABA, or the NBA. After Chris introduced me to Led Zeppelin during my 6th grade year, I quickly traded in my Vanilla Ice tapes (Boyyyeeeeeeee) for a personal musical journey that has helped me cultivate an appreciation for everything from AC/DC to John Denver (Ooh, John and those wild bass lines.). Initially, I could not stop listening to Classic Rock. I loved every Classic Rock CD, record or 8 track I could get my hands on (JAMES GANG!!!!). Accept for the band Mountain; seriously, despite Leslie Wests impressive guitar work, I am going to piss my pants the next time I have to hear Mississippi Queen on a 70s compilation album. Through my high school years, my focus on rock music narrowed and I especially became fond of Rush, Fleetwood Mac, The Who and Styx. Not only did I develop my musical tastes during this time, but I played in various groups as well. I participated in Shelby High Schools jazz combo, two rock bands and pep-band (Man, there are challenging bass parts in pep-band, Ill tell ya). My college experience at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington greatly expanded my knowledge of different musical genres. This diversity has in turn greatly influenced my bass playing. Besides playing in a jazz combo for two years, I also was in a nine piece funk band during my Junior and Senior years. These musical experiences coincided with the varied music that my friends Dan, Nick, JP and Kyle were turning me on to. My style of bass playing has become a hybrid of my recently found appreciation for Funk and Jazz and my foundation of Classic Rock. Basically, I try to make Rush funky and groovy, but the day I play like Geddy is the day Ill have more on my wall than just a Presidential Academic Fitness Award from 5th Grade. Since my college graduation in 2002, I have started to realize the greatness of the musical spectrum. Whether its Radiohead, Steely Dan or Classical music, it is all awesome. And that is why I recently moved to LA: to play and write in awesome bands that create musically challenging yet radio-friendly songs. And on a deeper level, play in bands that not only satisfy their artistic thirst, but in turn, inspire and console those that listen.
