Sounds Like: Rock music has been around for more than 50 years. From Elvis and Little Richard to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones; from Led Zeppelin and David Bowie to U2 and Nirvana, only a handful of things have always been in fashion: energy, passion, and great songwriting.Los Angeles singer / songwriter Chris Brooks captures these elements on Absinthe Academy’s new album, Gaudi Trashy. Brooks formed Absinthe Academy in 2003, and hit the local scene with his unique brand of vintage rock, howling Lennon-esque melodies and ripping raw, bluesy guitar solos ala Jimi Hendrix over a pounding and driving rhythm section. In the early months of 2005, the band went in to record their debut album at the famous 4th Street Studios in Santa Monica, the same studio where No Doubt laid down tracks for "Tragic Kingdom,” Fiona Apple worked on "Tidal,” and Incubus recorded "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." Brooks wanted to capture the raw energy of their live show, so they did things the old fashioned way - they toured extensively for over 2 months and recorded the whole album over a two day period. You can hear the energy from these sessions in tracks like "Midnight" and "Live Your Life.” You can hear the songwriting sensibilities on tracks such as “Last Days” and “Capitol Hill.” The band used almost no overdubs in making the album, and most of the vocal takes were done in a matter of minutes. You will not find any Pro Tools or Auto Tune on this album. This is the sound of a rock band in their element doing what they love to do and doing it well.
