About Me

Greetings, my name is KANE STANLEY and this isn't a site for just one band. I have been playing and studying drums for over 20 years, and I play with several bands. The three that keep me busiest right now are Cachaça, an Afro-Brazilian project out of Athens and Cosmic Charlie, a Grateful Dead tribute band from Athens, Ga. They couldn't be more different. In fact, I play congas and percussion with Cachaça and drum kit with the Cosmic Charlie. Check out our websites Cachaça and Cosmic Charlie . I also play in an all percussion group in athens called ¡MOYUBA!. Our myspace page is ¡MOYUBA! . We preserve folkloric drumming (Afro Cuban and Afro Haitian) and teach children and adults about the roots of drumming.
I also teach private drumset and percussion lessons. When I'm not doing that I am making beautiful shekeres out of gourds, beads and macrame. I also make didgeriedoos out of bamboo and play those as well. I have taught myself how to circular breathe and am willing to teach anybody who wants to learn. My music has taken me all over the United States, including a stint at the Oregon Country Fair in the Summer of 2005. I have also studied music at the University of Georgia, Berklee College of Music, in Boston, Mass., taken private lessons in Aachen, Germany, and got a real street voudou drumming education in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti in October of '98 (guede baby! AYIBOBO!). See my photo page for some amazing pictures of a vodou ceremony I attended on October 31, 1998. The pictures were taken by, Mark Adams . I have been studying and playing folkloric drumming and trance dance for about 10 years. This kind of interaction is just about as close as I have ever felt to being in church. After all this I still find time to practice Ashtanga Yoga. This has helped me find my focus and center when playing drums, thinking, talking, loving, just about anything that involves my mind, body, spirit connection. I am looking to meet people who have similar interests in MUSIC, MYSTICISM, and FOLKLORE.

Sounds Like: A guy who has studied drums and percussion for over 20 years, traveled to the Berklee College of Music, for an educational eye opener, and then traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti and studied folkloric voudou drumming as well as cuban style folkloric drums. At Berklee I got to take master classes with Horacio Hernandez, Walfredo Reyes Sr., Jamie Haddad, and John Ramsey. I also got to witness the almighty playing of Giovanni Hidalgo, and Trichy Sankerum. I have listened to funk, soul, blues and jazz, and played drumset with Cosmic Charlie on over 200 Grateful Dead tribute shows. I have spent the last 5 years trying to meld the sounds of Afro-Cuban percussion with Funk drumset playing.
