About Me

In Place of a Curse, John Ciardi 1959:

At the next vacancy for God, if I am elected, I shall forgive last the delicately wounded who, having been slugged no harder than anyone else, never got up again, neither to fight back, nor to finger their jaws in painful admiration.

They who are wholly broken, and they in whom mercy is understanding, I shall embrace at once and lead to pillows in heaven. But they who are the meek by trade, baiting the best of their betters with the exhortations of mock-helplessness

I shall take last to love, and never wholly. Let them all into heaven --- I abolish Hell --- but let it be read over them as they enter: "Beware the calculations of the meek, who gambled nothing, gave nothing, and could never receive enough."

My Interests

Volleyball, Post-colonial studies, racism, sexism, pretty much any -ism. Composition Pedagogy. So yeah, BOOKS.

I'd like to meet:

I met Rigoberta Menchu--Nobel Peace Prize Winner. Her words comforted this distruaght soul after 9/11. Someone asked her how she felt about the attacks--it seemed like they were fishing for sympathy. She said (I'm paraphrasing), "It is always sad when lives end before they have to." I didn't know anything about her when I met her, hearing those words was enough to know. If you want to know more, read her book.I want to meet people who inspire others, allowing that warm fuzzy feeling to pulse through their veins. Why do I want to meet them? To get that feeling, duh.

Music:

Generally: Indie, Alternative, Hip Hop, Jazz. The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Dave Matthews Band are the creamy whip cream atop my musical smorgasborg--the first and sweetest bite. I would be remiss to leave out the women in my life: Ani DiFrano, Tori Amos, Lush, Chara, Norah Jones, India Arie, Bjork, Rachael Yamagata

Movies:

Sadly, I haven't seen a movie to add to this list in a LONG freakin' time. Tampopo, Cinema Paradiso, Il Postino, Dancer in the Dark (Bjork), Shawshank Redemption, Amelie, Whale Rider, Lost in Translation: layered amongst a hundred others

Television:

Late Night with Conan O'Brian, The Office, Scrubs, Dave Chappelle Show, Reno 911.

Books:

New Books: Philip Roth's The human Stain, Pierre Bourdieu's Language and Symbolic Power, Salman Rusdie's Midnight's Children, V Woolf's Orlando, Enchi Fumiko's Masks, Zadie Smith's White Teeth, VS Naipaul's A Bend in the River, Delillo's White Noise, Updike's The Centaur, Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, Angela Carter's Nights at the Circus; my library grows weekly

Oscar Wilde and Japan

Take an example from our own day. I know that you are fond of Japanese things. Now, do you really imagine that the Japanese people, as they are presented to us in art, have any existence? If you do...
