Tommy Juarez, a native and current resident of Baytown, Texas, has been a music educator for the past 19 years. Before returning to Baytown, Tommy completed a four year tenure as Director of Bands and Choirs and instructor of high school Music Appreciation at James Irwin Charter Secondary School in Colorado Springs, CO, He also was an Assistant Choir director and The Artistic Musical Conductor for the Youth Performing Arts Choir all at New Life Church. Before moving to Colorado, Tommy resided in Lake Charles, Louisiana where he was the Director of Bands at Hamilton Christian Academy for 13 years and was also the Music director for two years at Glad Tidings Church where he conducted the worship choir and orchestra. An Avid conductor, Tommy studied with some of the finest internationally known conductors including Robert Reynolds, Craig Kirchhoff, Rick Blatti, Dr. Larry Livingston, Eric Whitacre and just recently with Robert Duke and Stephen Melillo. He was influenced by teachers and mentors that include Gene Stephenson, Dennis Eichler, Charles Forque, Larry Lang, Harvey Benstein, Dr. Royce Tevis, Rick Condit, Dr. William C. Groves, Keith Gates, and Cam Floria. Music has been his ticket for travel. Between the summers of 1989-1996, Tommy performed with the Continentals for eight seasons where he performed as a vocalist and instumentalist and directed/conducted groups to all 50 states three times. His travels with The Continentals also led him to perform and direct groups in Canada, Austria, Germany, France, Holland, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Australia, Fiji, and New Zealand. Tommy is a 1985 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas where he was a proud member of The "FAMOUS" Robert E. Lee High School Band ; a program with a known history of national prominence and internationally known conductors, composers, and performers that shared the stage with the bands that included the incomparable Doc' Severinsen, Allen Vizzutti, Dr. Frederick Fennell, Carmen Dragon and Vaclav Nehlybel. In the Lee Band, Tommy served as Student Conductor his senior year conducting not only the REL Marching Band, but also conducting The Symphonic and Jazz Band. He currently holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music from Charter Oak State College. Prior to his enrollment at Charter Oak, Tommy did the majority of his undergraduate music education studies at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. His numerous onstage Musical Theater performances include Keith Gates' TOM SAWYER, Cam Floria's THE DREAMER, and the "Smashing" Summer Success of Baytown Little Theater's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST! His current and past professional memberships include Louisiana Music Educators Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Music Educators National Conference, International Association of Jazz Educators, Colorado Music Educators Association, and Baytown Little Theater. He has performed with The Lake Charles Community Band, The Lake Charles Wind Symphony, The Lake Charles Messiah Chorus, The Baytown Concert Band, Baytown, Texas and recently performed with The Baytown Community Chorus, The Baytown Bayou Big Band, and The "Remember When" Orchestra in Beaumont, TX. Tommy enjoys being an occasional guest columnist for The Baytown Sun, as well as adjudicating various band events, clinics with and guest conducting a variety of bands and choirs. He currently teaches private Saxophone in the Goose Creek and Barbers Hill School Districts and has served on faculty at the brand new Goose Creek Memorial High School in Baytown where he has taught Spanish I. In his spare time, you will most likely find him at the Garth/Baker road STARBUCKS, holding babies, enjoying and bragging on his nieces and nephews, reading, his family, and most of all- cooking and fellowship with his many friends.
