Ballet
I miss the days when dancing was done the back yard,
Before leotards and tights were my only outfit.
Before the days when my life consisted of standing in front of a mirror.
When home was not home,
But, the first floor of an old run down building in the ghetto.
Striving only to hit a pirouette,
Which would never come.
BAM! The noise of my body hitting the hard floor,
Only to revile burses and blooded toes.
All I want is perfection and poise,
Instead all I get is the yelling noise form my dance director mouth.
Learning one dance after another,
Only to perform once.
As the eyes peering at me like sharp pieces of glass they pierce me.
My body freezes,
As I think to myself “what do I do next?â€
The music starts,
No turning back now.
The instincts of my body takes over
And I dance,
I dance like never before, hitting every move and never looking back.
Like I am on a cloud, nothing can touch me.
Nobody is watching,
Then the music stops.
The glass eyes stare at me,
With a gleam of amazement.
All this preparation, was it worth it?
Then I hear the voice of the director,
“You could have done better!â€
Only to start a new year ballet.
I wish I could go back to the days before
My life was spent in front of a mirror,
That never lying mirror.
It sees everything that I eat,
When I am a count off,
When I fail!
That piece of glass that inspires creativity
And shatters dreams!
