I am here for Networking

About Me

Good morning, geniuses, philosopher kings and queens, working-class heroes, progressive utopians with no sense of humor, lurking conservatives, pain sponges, need machines and psychic vampires.
Heed my words, idolators, fornicators of fornication, for the end times are nearer than ever, for Air America hath doth fucked up again.
After a mere six months on the air, the Marc Maron Show, led by Our Zen Master Marc Maron, was shitcanned by Air America Radio. Instead, they offered as atonement for their disastrous decision to let Danny Goldberg run the show, a return to the morning hours -- for a pittance not worth another bicoastal move to please an employer who had screwed him over twice.
Those who have not partaken of the feast of unleavened funny do not understand. But the many proud Maronites and Seditionistas that populate my friends list understand...and we will carry the Word of Maron, Earl, Smalls, Milfingtons, et. al, until they are heard again throughout the land.
But enough about them. On to the important person: ME!!
An unabashed, unrepentant, proud progressive with a finely-honed sense of irony, I do not suffer fools gladly. No sheeple, warmongers, or wingnuts need apply. Iconoclasts, snarkmeisters, and witty people only. If you wish you'd been part of the Algonquin Roundtable in a previous life, sucking down booze with the literati, drop me a line. Bring the funny, or bring chocolate. Those are your choices.
Lucky enough to be happily married for nearly 20 years to my best friend and soulmate, who puts up with my incessant ranting about politics, the world at large, and just about everything, because I have long believed that everyone is entitled to my opinion.
Writer, seeker, proud geek, still raging at the machine but embracing my role as tribal elder, crone, confidante, and mentor.

My Interests

Writing (fiction and sociopolitical essays), web design, progressive politics, cooking, yoga/pilates and other gentle forms of exercise for the over-50 set, trying to keep fit and live long and well.

I'd like to meet:

Like-minded progressives with a sense of humor. People interested in early 20th century American social history. People who like to write, esp. women writers of fiction, but writers in general who want a critical eye. Too many people read what I write and say "That's fantastic!" I prefer a more critical eye and good feedback on how to make my writing better. If you are a similarly-minded person who likes to write and wants to get better at it, contact me.I am not impressed by fame (though I have been known to turn into a babbling, blushing idiot in the face of it). In my experience, one should never meet the artist, for he/she is always less than his/her work.

Music:

Electric blues, vintage jazz (1920's-30's), Bela Fleck, African pop music, traditional reggae, Green Day, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia Band, Allman Bros. Band, pre-"Everyday" Dave Matthews Band, a little of this, a little of that. No hip-hop, I'm afraid.

Movies:

The Shawshank Redemption, A Clockwork Orange, Animal Crackers, It Happened One Night, The Limey, The Claim, Empire of the Sun, Jude, The Station Agent, The Lord of the Rings

Television:

Countdown with Keith Olbermann, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Washington Journal, Survivor, Lost, Boston Legal, The Documentary Channel, Emeril Live, Real Time with Bill Maher, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Carnivale

Books:

Progressive political nonfiction, Susan Howatch's Church of England series, Jodi Picoult novels for fun, Southern Gothic fiction, books on the Arts & Crafts movement.

Heroes:

Women who treasure their experiences and don't try to be 19 forever. My sister, who also managed to survive our childhood. My friend R., for being the bravest woman I know in the face of horrific adversity and never once losing her humanity. My blogbrother G., for being fabulous and fun to hang with. And last but by no means least, Mr. B@B, for putting up with me for the last 23 years.

Musings on the death of Steve Howe

I may be a Mets fan, but I always had a soft spot for Steve Howe.  I'm not sure why; it's not as if he was particularly cute, or charming.  In fact, when he was in the prime of his career, h...
