Mastering almost every aspect of the traditional elements of folk isn't easy, but MICK KINNEY effortlessly embodies the term multi-instrumentalist. Hardly the typical coffeehouse folkie, Kinney's varied approach to folk makes him the perfect choice for this category. Yes, he can do the singer-songwriter thing, but he usually brings a ton of instruments with him and uses each song to showcase a different style. Kinney plays zydeco on Buford Highway, straight folk in Decatur, bluegrass at festivals, torch at the Defoor Center and rock on tour with his brother Kevn. Kinney's incredible debut album, Nothing Left To Chance, is like a mini jukebox of folk, bossa nova, ragtime and quite possibly even the kitchen sink. Much like an old, dusty 78 RPM record, Kinney's so hopelessly old-fashioned he doesn't even have a website.
As one of his fellow musicians recently declared, "Mick can play anything on any instrument!" Though he denies this, it is not far from the truth. In concert as well as on his new CD, Nothing Left to Chance, Mick plays fiddle, piano, banjo, guitar, accordion, lap steel, and anything else he can get his hands on. Mick's original material is crafted for a variety of musical styles including Old Time Fiddle, Barrel House Piano, and Cajun Accordion. His songs create videos for the ear. Like his brother Kevin of "drivin n' cryin," Mick's lyrics can be at once heavy and humorous.
