Add to My Profile | More Videos While other rappers chose to defame women, use crime and drugs as a backdrop for their musical expression, One 9 Shangrali has a sound truly his own, blending his rhymes based on his multi-cultural upbringing on the East Coast and in more recent years the West Coast, once the hub of the music explosion which still sets the trend.Calling his musical expression “Urban Alternative†One 9 Shangrali gets much of his influence and motivation from Afro Cuban beats, the melodies of smooth jazz and the tried and true sounds of old school hip-hop.†It's really about whatever's going to make your butt shake and move†One 9 Shangrali says. “I'm truly a fan of anyone who can get out there and play anything that sets the stage for what I need to present vocally. People have to understand individuality is ok, I don't have to conform and they don't either. It's about freedom of expression. It's all right to be yourself.â€One 9 Shangrali says,†for me, performing is my soapbox to the world. I can make 'em laugh, and can make 'em cry. I really call it word play. I use words in a funky way, to say something different.â€Music aficionados say his rhymes are clean, crisp, direct and always hit their mark.He has performed with such musical acts as Del The Funkee Homosapien, Digital Underground, Onyx, The Pharcyde, De La Soul and Coffee Brown. He has written for Messy Marv,Louie 'The Babblein' Kabbabie, Frankie â€Kash†Waddy of P-funk / Bootsy Collins and Shock G of Digital Underground. The origins of his life may not be all that mystical. He maintains a strong connection to Connecticut where most of his family lives, but was born to teen-age parents in Oakland, California. He started rapping at the age of 9 in school talent shows. He was ultimately raised by his grandmother who gave him a strong sense of self and family as well as a belief in the church where he also developed a comfort level speaking before groups of people. One 9 Shangrali migrated back to the Bay Area after his formative years. Music has been in his blood since he can remember. His musical roots have been shaped by the influences of the music revolution in the Bay Area over the past several decades. His rap mentors were performers like Run-DMC, Doug E. Fresh, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Beastie Boys, Melly Mel, Big Daddy Kane, L.L. Cool J, Pharcyde, Guru, Del the funky homosapien and Digital Underground. One 9 Shangrali knew it would only be a matter of time before he was able to have his voice heard. One 9 Shangrali credits Bay Area bands Sly and the Family Stone, Oakland funk band Tower of Power and Santana as some of the most influential in his life. He holds the Bay Area band Maze, featuring Frankie Beverly especially close to his heart.†What is really comes down to, One 9 Shangrali says, is, I've been waiting to do this my whole life. You remember when you were sick and you couldn't go out to play. You remember how that felt. Well, all I want is to go out and play. I can throw down with any style of music, any time scale. all I need is the chance.â€Past/current projectsHisFolksHomeStudios production company vocal remix for singer Sarah “Siennaâ€
