He began his career by entertaining for family and friends as a child then moved on to singing gospel professionally.In the early fifties Jimmy made the switch from gospel to rhythm and blues.
He has shared the same stage with other great artists such as Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Bobby Day, Eugene Church and Jessie Belvin.
From 1957-1959 Jimmy was a vocalist in a group by the name of "The Chargers".In 1958 Jimmy recorded his first record for H.B Barnum. HB hired a 40 piece orchestra for these sessions. His first two single recordings for H.B were called "Thank Him" and a cover version of Hank Williams' "You Win Again".
In 1962 Jimmy had a regional hit record in Los Angeles and a monor national release that did well in come markets outside of LA. Such as Washington, DC ("Here Comes The Night").Jimmy also wrote the song "Time Is On My Side" which Irma Thomas recorded in 1964 and The Rolling Stones recorded in 1964.
Today Time is On My Side is a legendary song that has been used in movies, commercials, much more.From 1964-66 worked the Chitlin Circuit touring with other acts sharing the bil with The Kind Curtis Band, Solomon Burke and Wilson Pickett.Jimmy has worked closely with Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley. Writing, and recording with them both. Jimmy sang base on "Soul Rebel" and "Chances Are" on the "Chances Are" album. Jimmy's songwriting talent led to musical collaborations with such notables as Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Lloyd Price, Lou Rawls and Johnny Nash.While performing in venues extending from the smallest Chitlin' Circuit dives to the stages of the Apollo Theater and Carnegie Hall-Jimmy has appeared with Jerry Lee Lewis, Solomon Burke, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Ben E. King, and Ike & Tina Turner.In 1970 Eddie Palmeieri invited Jimmy Norman to sing back up on his new album "Harlem River Drive". Jimmy ended up singing the song. Jimmy is also the composer of the song "If (We Have Peace Today)"Jimmy was producing songs for a group named The Coasters. During that time Jimmy Norman was invited to sing with the group. It was a success. Jimmy toured with Carl Gardner and The Coasters for almost 30 years!In 1987 Jimmy Norman and Deborah Colony founded Badcat Records. Jimmy released an Album titled "Home" under this label compiled of songs written by himself, Deborah and Jeff Saxon.In 2004 Jimmy Norman released a "Little Pieces" on Judy Collins' Wildflower Records. Little Pieces ONLY contains songs written or co-written by Jimmy.Jimmy's new project titled "The New Logic Project" is a compilation of songs composed by Jimmy using Apple's Logic program. These instrumentals are being submitted to popular artists for consideration and are also available to artists who are interested in using these great works.
