About Me

about me
I grew up in the small town of Didsbury, Alberta. From there I moved to Edmonton to go to the University of Alberta. I've been a Kananaskis Parks Interpreter, president of the Lister Hall Residence at the University of Alberta and a cancer research technician. Currently I'm doing public relations for the government of Alberta. That pays the bills.
about my music
I started playing banjo when I was eight years old. At 14 Canadian Banjo champion Jake Peters happened to move to my hometown, and I was able to take some banjo lessons. At 16 I started to play guitar. I was mostly a basement player, but then I started to get more involved in the music scene here in Edmonton.
bix mix boys
My current project is the traditional bluegrass band called The Bix Mix Boys. Logan Sarchfield on guitar, Matt Hotte on fiddle and mandolin, Jim Storey on bass and myself on banjo. Last year we were fortunate to play in a number of festivals across Alberta. This year we have expanded our repertoire to include some original tunes, and we hope to be playing in a town near you.
maple creek bluegrass band
In 2001 I hooked up with the Edmonton bluegrass band Maple Creek. With them, I played shows in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and PEI. In 2003, with the help of mandolin wizard Emory Lester, we produced "One Good Reason". The first song is an instrumental I wrote, and the second song features me on vocals and is also a song I wrote.
the george bushes
Very close to the same time I hooked up with Maple Creek I also hooked up with The George Bushes. We played shows across Alberta. With little fanfare and no promotion, The George Bushes were able to get a good local following and charted on campus radio stations across Canada. Melisa Stefaniw, singer and writer for The George Bushes, has finished a solo album for release in 2006. The third song of my music features a song written by her, with me playing banjo
miscellaneous
I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to teach at workshops in Alberta and British Columbia, play many festivals and play with some of my heroes. I hope you enjoy the small sampling of my music I have on this site, and I hope I run into you in some venue in the future.
