GALEN

Galen is an underground music artist and community educator in Oakland, California. He has been producing music for the last 4 years in Oakland, and has co-produced the underground West Oakland rap legend Redemption, worked with Rashidi Omari from the rap group Company of Prophets, female emcee extraordinaire The Matriarch, nationally known poet slam champion the late Joy De La Cruz, and the politically conscious hip-hop dou NaR. He has also worked on albums with JB Rap from the Deep Dick Collective. Throughout the last 4 years Galen has also produced 3 solo albums of his lyrical poetry with his down-tempo hip-hop beats, and has collaborated with the Los Angeles producer Logic the Prophet to put out two music videos on the Oasis DVD. Galen runs a music studio in downtown Oakland that offers free studio time to street youth and homeless young adults. Galen manages Cov Records, the music label for the community studio, which has produced thousands of songs, countless solo albums, and 2 compilation CDs. Galen also works with the Art in Action Bay Area based collective which offers week-long trainings for young adults, where he has produced 3 compilation CDs of Bay Area poets, rappers, musicians and singers. Galen produces beats for many hip-hop artists in the Bay Area, as well as doing post-production mastering for albums, photography for the artists, and graphic arts design of CD covers, posters, and fliers. Galen has co-produced music and arts events in the Bay Area, and has most recently helped facilitate events with the theme of Stop The Violence, using art to spread awareness about community violence. Galen's music reflects his political and spiritual beliefs, and explores the roots of violence and oppression in society, while offering a vision of peace and unity through poetic rap intertwined with smooth rhythmic hip-hop sounds.
