****************** By Erik Stimpfle | FOR THE JUNEAU EMPIRE Imagine going to a job interview with 2,000 applicants fighting for one position. This is the life of aspiring actress and model Wrenna Monet, formerly of Juneau. Was born Wrenna Claudia Monet in Petersburg and later attended Juneau-Douglas High School. She moved to Hollywood, Calif., at age 18. Her initial goal was to be on one magazine cover. She's since surpassed that goal by landing five magazine covers and two calendar covers while traveling to exotic locals such as the Bahamas, Peru and Las Vegas for shoots. For all her globetrotting, though, her career launched as a 17-year-old waitress at the Hangar on the Wharf restaurant. Accompanied by her mother, Monet entered and won a local Miss Hawaiian Tropic swimsuit contest held at Marlintini's Lounge. Monet then won the statewide contest and went to Hawaii for a national model search with the title of Miss Alaska Hawaiian Tropic. The small-town girl got her first glimpse of big-time pageants. Monet hired an agent and started building a modeling portfolio after her Hawaii experience. In 2004, she won the Ms. Petite Teen Alaska pageant and moved to Los Angeles full-time. "Whatever she set her mind to, she did," Kay, Wrenna's mother, said. "You have to let your kids follow their heart." Monet was 18 and determined to make it in Hollywood. Her dream got off to a bumpy start, though. In her first year, she said she met a con artist, got ripped off and lived in her car for six months. Monet got a big break when her agent booked her a modeling assignment in Peru for Maxim en Espanol. Traveling to Peru was an adventure, but the photo shoot didn't go as planned. "I'm in a thong in Machu Picchu and there's five policemen that come up and were pestering (us)," she said. It was illegal to do swimsuit photos in Machu Picchu. Her producer in charge of the shoot took off while her Peruvian bodyguards explained the situation to the police. She never heard from the producer again but months later a friend told her she was featured in a four-page photo spread in Maxim en Espanol. Monet received $300 for the shoot only after her agent pressured the magazine for payment. Things got worse when she returned to Hollywood. With no money, Monet lived out of her car by sneaking into private campgrounds late at night. She then got into a car wreck on Sunset Boulevard, breaking her right wrist and doing major ligament damage to her knee. Her best friend, Austin Connella, took her into his home and let her stay there while she healed up. Now 22 and living in L.A. for four years, her career is starting to take off. Monet recently landed a small role in the movie Lakeview Terrace, starring Samuel L. Jackson. The Sony Pictures' movie is due for release in September. Producers cast Monet as a stripper paid to seduce and blackmail a loyal husband played by Patrick Wilson. "I get sexy roles," Monet said. "My manager says I have to do them. I dislike them. I have to stick to the sexy roles until I can break into more sophisticated five-pages-of-lines roles." Though she works as a model, Monet draws a line on what kinds of work she chooses. Shortly after arriving in Hollywood at 18, she said Playboy offered her $25,000 to pose nude. She declined the offer. "I don't like being viewed as a walking vagina," she said. "If I went back to Alaska after being a centerfold I would have no respect in my mind." Monet currently studies art education at Santa Monica College and will pose for photographers from Vogue and Cosmopolitan magazine for Taschen Books later this year. The book will feature Monet as a model and her paintings. The book will be sold at art auctions and in galleries. "It will make me look like a piece of art, not a sex icon," Monet said.“Everything happens for a reason,†is the one thing my mother always told me growing up. We never know exactly what we’re meant for, what we’ll be, or who we’ll fall in love with. If we did then it’d take all the fun out of living and walking on our yellow brick road that goes threw the ups and downs of hills and valleys. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest, to see, feel and taste. I’m a raised Wiccan so live my life by Karma, worship all gods as one god, and will forever be on my journey to find myself, my spiritual awakening, and my destiny. I have had my heart broken just as I have broken hearts; I’ve loved, learned and lost only to be even more grateful for those who are still in my life. Love is a powerful word that should be used in life, we go through life to fast I think, I try to walk slow so I may appreciate everything, and everything I have gone through for it has made me the person I see in the mirror, my shadow and reflection. I keep a tight group of friends whom I love very much for my friends are my family even though some come and go, the fact we shared good memories together and even met is a blessing in my eyes, for true good friends are hard to find. Being born and raised in a rural fishing village in Southeast Alaska has made me appreciate what matters, the simple things, where I’m from. I came to Los Angeles a few weeks after I turned eighteen with no expectations or idea what I would be getting myself into. Honestly I’d never seen a fake pair of tits till I was eighteen, I grew up on an island you can only get to my boat or plane within the inside passage where the gold rush took place. You could hear owls for miles at night, view every star, see mountains disappear into the horizon, wipe your ass with leaves, rub sticks together and live a life in solitude, nude if you wanted, it’d rain so much sometimes that if I was a vampire I’d get no blood because nobody would be outside!! My mom was a hippie artists and dad was a famous mountain climber that made their way up to Alaska with little money, as a baby my home was across the channel from Petersburg on Koupernof Island, pop 10. My mother would put me into a Jan sport backpack as she’d drive the skiff across the channel holding my baby brother in her lap and the motor with the other. We had no electricity, running water, and no neighbors except for the deer that would eat our tulips, and bears that’d shit big piles in our yard. I was there till three years old when my father put our house on Styrofoam and floated it across the channel with skiffs to launch it up onto our new piece of land on Petersburg Island, pop 3000. I love to go camping, snowboarding, hiking, canoeing, climbing, boldering…you name it I’ll do it! I’m not afraid of much, and there’s not much I can’t handle coming from a place where all you know of the outside world is through TV and magazines, put it this way I was a Girl scout so I know my shit, literally, I had badges! I also wrestled for a little over three years till I slipped my disc in a match going for first place at 112lbs. Wrestling was the one thing that gave me the ability to be a strong woman, be strong willed, dedicated, loyal and focused. All things that many do not learn or appreciate. I'm intrigued by the questions that can not be answered, don't like things that are easily achievable for I like to experience all that I can. I live a really healthy lifestyle, do yoga, Pilates, and play with my dog at the beach, working out at Venice or hiking in numerous places. I’m not a city chick; I’m aggressive, humble, and positive and never hold back anything except for my feelings at the necessary moments. I attend Santa Monica College majoring in Art Education, minoring in Journalism to transfer with the goal to be an art teacher for grade school or college students. I like to have a plan B, love kids, and want to give back in some way by doing color therapy to trigger disabled students minds and expose their young brains to colors that could stimulate happiness, comfort, etc. Being an artist is my meditation, a way that I can show you what’s within my soul, my visions, my feelings and my expression. I stub my toes a lot, rarely wear matching socks, always cry at the sad parts in movies, cook damn good soup, believe in UFO's, and am a democrat!
