My new collection of mininovels
Like Blood in Water is available now from
Fiction Collective 2 ...
Like Blood in Water is a collection of five short works of fiction labeled mininovels. From back cover copy: “In these five surrealist collages, waking life continually gives way before the onslaught of dreams.
Yuriy Tarnawsky has condensed the vastness of scope typical of novels into shorter fragments--mininovels--that require the reader’s active participation. The tone is a balance of dead-pan comedy and solemn gothic, sometimes a near-parody of wide-eyes candor, sometimes recounting utterly mad or barely conceivable state of affairs. Like the imagery of the title, the prose creates a sense of permutation; the mininovels spread and converge into one another. His musicians, actors, and doctors reside in oddly formed apartments, abandoned churches, eerie sets. While they work, they find themselves in states of literal and figurative dismemberment, thinking of violence, blood, quick satiations of desire, burning loss. For these characters, nothing is stable. Time dissolves, ghosts come back, memories become labyrinthine vortexes through which they must struggle. Everywhere are archetypal imaginings, distorted perceptions, a deceptive past. The disconnections seem obvious, yet the synaptic lapses are ones that readers will eagerly navigate on their own.

Two More New Books by Yuriy Tarnawsky
The following two new books by the Ukrainian-American author Yuriy Tarnawsky were recently released by their publishers.
Korotki khvosty. This is the author’s own Ukrainian-language version of the English-language original collection of short stories
Short Tails. Written in a rigidly controlled prose, these stories deal with absurd, often surreal situations and center on the quintessential existential topics of identity and self-realization. What unites them in addition is the often guttural and harsh-sounding names of the antiheroes.
An Eye in the Belfry. Is a bilingual Ukrainian/English collection of the poetry of one of the best-known contemporary Ukrainian poets Volodymyr Tsybulko with Mr. Tarnawsky’s English translation. It contains poems from the volumes
The Pyramid, Angels and Texts, and
A Book of Complaints. The book also includes a 2003 interview between Messrs. Tsybulko and Tarnawsky.
The books may be obtained from the publisher,
