When I was three years old I broke my Dad's record player (they weren't called turntables or decks then) because I wanted to listen to The Band's "Up On Cripple Creek". When asked why I did this I told my Dad that I wanted to hear the beat the drums made again and there wasn't anyone around to put it on for me. After that my Dad and Brothers put anything that I wanted to listen to on for me as I was going to listen to what ever it was whether they liked it or not. By the time I was 10 I was put at the top of the house with the piano, an old record player and my Grandad's tape recorder that got connected to the stereo by a din lead (remember those?), a battered snare and hi hat and a load of cushions that I used as tom toms and floor toms. That was my first drum kit, and when it broke (which it did very often) I would just lift the lid on the piano and start playing. Picking out songs from the radio by ear, I was one of the cool kids at school as I could play "Enola Gay" by OMD, "Just can't get enough" by Depeche Mode, "Don't Go" by Yazoo, the theme to Steptoe and Son, Madness' version of Swan Lake and for some reason "Funky Town" by Lips Inc. Then by chance when I was 12 / 13, I actually listened during a music class and the teacher taught us about major and minor triads! I went home... got on the piano and wrote my first song based on what I had learnt that day. Then I saw The Blues Brothers and that was it! I was going to be a musician... no I wanted to be Ray Charles or James Brown or the drummer as he had concertina toms and they were cool; and if I couldn't be any of them I was going to be Duck Dunn. That's how it started for me.
I have been a part of the North London music scene for the best part of 20 years and I have worked with the likes of Pauline Henry, Danny Redd, Clyde (The Funky Drummer) Stubblefield, Akimbo (Nick Van Gelder / Simon Bartholomew), Paul Waller (Producer), Richard Mazda, Lunatic, Phat Phrequency, The Dirty Feel, Victor Davies and Ronpaizly. I used to co -organise the jam sessions; Flipside, Ashram, Breaking Bread and the Blue Note (Hoxton Square)..
I am a very proud owner of a Hammond, a Rhodes, a Clavinet and a Roland SH101. I also use a Nord Electro 2 which has replaced all these great keyboards and saved my back and van hire bills.
These days I'm playing in a Rock N Roll band called The Runner Brothers who have been playing as a band for 25 years, We have 2 residencies once a month, I play in a 9 piece funk covers band called The Rugs, I deputise for The Doc Kay's Blues Band (who have been gigging since 1966) and I have my own organ combo; The Dan Keys Band.
