The anticipation is building for six island youngsters waiting to perform before one of the hottest dance crews in America.
After more than 6,000 online votes, the Bailamos Dance Crew won the chance to open for Jabbawockeez during its two-day performance on Guam. The Pacific Daily News held a contest inviting island dance crews to compete for the opportunity. Readers voted for their favorite crew.
Jabbawockeez is the first winner of the popular MTV television show, "America's Best Dance Crew," and is known for its free-style/hip hop dance styles and masked performances.
Mary Ann Santos, Bailamos Dance Studio and Music studio owner and director, said she's proud of her students, who didn't have much time to prepare for the competition.
"Everything was new -- it wasn't a recycled dance where we've done it before," Santos said. "It really shows how versatile and artistic they really are. One of the hardest things to do as a dancer is to make up the choreography.
"
Crew member John Kelly "Jake" Quilantang is credited with choreographing parts of the routine for the contest. The 15-year-old, who has only been dancing for a year, said he's a big fan of the the MTV show, especially because of Jabbawockeez.
"One moment, we're watching them on TV and the next thing you know, we're opening for them," Quilantang says. "It's a good feeling too.
"
The Bailamos Dance Crew is made up of 15 members but only six were able to perform for the contest, Santos said. The dance group is fluent with other dance styles, including ballroom dancing and jazz, but focused on hip-hop for the contest.
Santos said audiences will be pleased with some of her standout performers, including brothers Joshua and Jeremy Zamora. who have been dancing with the group for the last two years.
"These two started dancing before they started walking," she said.
