Johnny Z aka JDeville The Galactic Record Producer

About Me

Born and raised in Vallejo, California, Johnny Z aka JDeville had a major role in shaping the Northern California Bay Area Hip Hop sound. It began in high school where he played guitar in various rock bands, but later shifted his talents towards rap music when he met and collaborated with DC The Brain Supreme (Tag Team) on underground rap tapes at Sacramento State college. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Marketing in 1989, Johnny moved back to Vallejo where he and high school friend Tim Lyon (TL aka L-Train) hooked up with Jim Trujillo (Jay Tee) and began writing, recording, and performing rap songs as 3Deep. From this, Rated Z Recordz and Productionz was born and a 4-track studio was built in a downtown Vallejo building. After numerous demo tapes, live shows, a name change, and Johnny Z becoming the producer and no longer a rapper in the group, Rated Z signed a production deal with Cory Robbins and Profile Records for N2DEEP. The album and single, Back To The Hotel, was released in 1992 and within a month established the group and Johnny as major players on radio and sales. The album and single would soon go gold and help establish Johnny Z as a producer to watch. His career continued to soar as Johnny worked with big name acts, Run DMC (Profile), Spice 1 (Jive), E-40 (Sic Wid it/Jive), Baby Bash, Potna Deuce (Profile), Mac Dre (Thizz), Scapegoat Wax (Grand Royale), and Ron C (Profile). Rated Z Studios also became a regular hot spot for many Bay Area rappers, as well as artists from around the country. Many years later and more gold records, Johnny continues to produce music for artists as well as for movies, videos, and commercials. He has also broadened his production skills by working with rock artists' Chuck Prophet and Stevie Salas. Johnny is always trying to push Hip Hop into new directions. His current pet project is a group called, Luxurious, which he likes to call, Hip Hop Lounge music. Rated Z continues releasing records out of Las Vegas and continues to work in his private studio, now called, Dirty Martini Labs.
