Off duty Newington Police Officer SRO Ciara McDermott was killed under senseless and tragic circumstances at her home on November 21, 2005.She joined the Newington Police Department on August 2, 1998 after graduating Fairfield University.She leaves behind a father, mother, two sisters and a brother. With deep sadness the Newington Police Department reports the death of a sister police officer.Officer McDermott was an outstanding police officer who served the Newington Police Department and community with honor and distinction for seven years. Officer McDermott was the school resource officer for the Newington Police Department and touched the lives of numerous high school students. In addition, Officer McDermott served as a field training officer and crisis negotiator for Newington Police. At the high school she taught personal safety courses for the students, provided counseling, and functioned as an intermediary for the police department, high school and students.
