About Me

Hello, my name is Lana Maht Wiggins, author of "Notes from Refuge" my first published book of poems, written during my exile from New Orleans immediately after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Although Notes from Refuge is my first full-length book, I have a long list of publications and hold a Master's Degree in Creative Writing from the University of Louisiana, and currently teach American Literature and Technical Writing at ULL. I've studied with great teachers as a grad student, including Ernest Gaines, Luis Urrea, and Darrell Bourque. My main area of literary interest is the study of feminine poetic voices that emerged from the Modern Literary period . . . poets like Mina Loy, H.D., Marianne Moore, and Amy Lowell helped to shape the future of the feminine poetic voice.

Notes from Refuge includes "E. Currently, I am researching the life and legends of Countess Elizabeth Bathory, partly for my own curiosity, partly for my interest in women's studies, but mainly for research for my next book. I must also tell you that I maintain the innocence of the crimes E. Bathory was accused of in 1611. What is known as fact of history, was, in fact, merely a power play of the patriarchy to bring down a woman of power, wealth, and knowledge . . . and beauty.
E. Bathory was framed.
