About Me

aka "shameless self-promotion." I'm a college professor who works and writes in the field of teacher education. I'm infinitely geekier than I sound on paper. I'm passionate about my friends and I enjoy my job. 'just published my first book and I'm working on the second. The first book was on assessment and measurement for schools. Hmmm... I AM as geeky on paper... what else... I lift weights, bike and run, I enjoy traveling. I went to Beijing and Hong Kong earlier this year. I'll be in Croatia Spring '06.

My Interests

Travel, Writing, Exploring NYC, Weight lifting, Biking, Running, Teaching, Good Food, Live music, Good Books...

I'd like to meet:

Conservatives, liberals, mad women, sober men, monkey handlers and prophets. I like intelligent people with diverse points of view. I'm really just looking for some people to talk with, and bounce ideas around. I have a great circle of friends here in NYC, but I'm always looking to expand that. I have a pretty off-beat sense of humor, so you should be able to hang with that... If you're nowhere near NYC, that's cool, too, as long as you have something to say and a couple synapses to back it up.

Music:

All sorts; Jazz, trance, jazz, metal progressive- Roots Manuva, Ronski Speed, John Coltrane, Aphex Twin, Diana Krall, Underworld, Tricky, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Appleseed Cast, Death Cab for Cutie

Movies:

I'm starting to get into Hong Kong Cinema, I'm working my way through the early Chow Yun Fat: God of Gamblers, A Better Tomorrow, The Killer... Also, Anthony and Cleopatra, Solaris, Killing Zoe, Captain Blood, Holy Smoke, Lantana, Blade Runner, Kung Fu Hustle. I've been catching a lot of Hayao Miyazaki’s early work, like Nausicaa of the Vally of the Wind

Television:

I'll watch sometimes, but it's not my favorite thing to do. Every 5 minutes of television temporarily robs you of 1 IQ point. Aqua Teen Hunger Force is one of my guilty pleasures, though, and so is Rome

Books:

Stuff I'm reading now: Children PlayingBefore a Statue of Hercules, The Colossus of New York, A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again

Heroes:

I think we should be our own heroes. If we put others on pedestals, it's just an invitation for them to get knocked down.

My Blog

Heading into the new school year

For me, the year is over and the new one begins next week. I guess I have my own calendar, just like the Chinese. Most teachers do; even though we celebrate all the holidays you normal people do; tha...

Blizzard Watching

I have a perfect window for watching the snow fall. It opens on to a huge courtyard 5 stories below and is well-insulated from sound. Today, though, with the snow and tapering off of traffic, it's dea...
