Sunset River Marketplace is a vibrant exciting gallery located in the historic fishing village of Calabash, North Carolina. The uber-creative space invites artists and collectors to explore the displays and classrooms that make up the 10,000 square feet of fine arts and crafts. Showcasing only artists from the two Carolinas, the eclectic gallery boasts an amazing offering of clay art and pottery; oil paintings, watercolors, mixed media, pastels and acrylics; plus award-winning metalworks, wood pieces, hand-blown glass, fiber art, artisan-made jewelry and more.
Ginny and Joe Lassiter opened Sunset River Marketplace in 2002 with the idea of making it a community center where locals and visitors would feel comfortable finding art pieces and honing their crafts. Today, Sunset River Markeplace has become one of the most popular “destinations†for people visiting the area. Over 200 local and regional artists are represented here, Both national and local artists conduct workshops and instruction in the large back classroom. Also located right here at the gallery are a pottery studio, complete with two kilns and a custom framing department run by master framer Lou Aliotta.
This year, the Watercolor Society of North Carolina (WSNC) has selected Sunset River Marketplace for its 64th Annual WSNC Exhibition, which will hang at the gallery from Oct. 11 through Nov. 30, 2009. In conjunction with the Exhibition, a watercolor workshop with juror Steve Rogers will be held at the Studio, which is the gallery's workshop facility located about a mile away.
If you find yourself in the Calabash area, stop by for a cup of gourmet coffee or tea, or enjoy a glass of wine at one of the bistro tables. Or better yet, carry it with you as you meander through Sunset River Marketplace. In the meantime, be sure to visit the Sunset River Marketplace website at www.sunsetrivermarketplace.com .
