(From theboisebeat.com written by Stephanie May)The band name honestly caught my attention first. The moniker "Morning and Pills" sounded like an art-house flick about drug abuse and brought my imagination to a doped-up dude waking with matted hair and hungover eyes, immediately reaching for his needle. That image is pretty accurate, when pertaining to the track "Open Wound."This song's sound is reminiscent of the Nirvana-era, where music didn't have to be flashy and come packaged with a short skirt. It was just real, honest, and needed no vehicle to be heard other than its own artistry. No one's trying to be a rock star here, which puts the focus in its right place...on the music. The simple riff, repeated over and over, doesn't once sound monotonous among the lyrics describing a caustic habit that is detrimental to any relationship standing in its way.Morning and Pills formerly consisted of members of Bovalexia, Built to Spill, and The Magnetics, but has since slimmed down to lone member Stephen Hayhurst and serves as a studio project with guest musicians. This particular track features Hayhurst on guitar/vocals and Spencer Stowe (Bone Daddy) on the Wurlitzer organ heard in the background.Since it is a side project, Morning and Pills does not have any releases. Four demo songs, including this one, are available for download here.If you're into: The Smiths, Leonard CohenStraight from the band:
"'Open Wound' is about [a close friend]. His addiction to heroine caused a lot of turmoil and I suppose that since I couldn't afford a psychiatrist, writing a song about him was the best thing I could do to keep my head."
