FLICK the AFA

This space has been created to alert people about groups that seek to ban basic human rights to U.S. citizens through various intimidation tactics. The American Family Association is a Christian-based group that puts pressure on various corporations, television networks, movie studios and politicians when they feel morally offended. This group believes it speaks for every person in the country, but they don't and it's time that people are made aware of how much influence this special interest group has over the rest of us. This site will alert you to their latest boycotts and threats, and hopefully we will become a force to be reckoned with as we show these people that we can all speak for ourselves. Please join us in showing support for the companies and politicians that are under attack from this small-minded group of people.
Five years ago when "Desperate Housewives" first appeared on ABC, a group called The American Family Association found the show to be extremely immoral in its depictions of sex, love, and parenting among other things and urged its members to bombard ABC with calls, letters and emails protesting the series saying it was going to destroy the very fabric of the country. Their second wave of protests was aimed at the show's sponsors, whom they threatened with boycotts if they did not pull their sponsorship from the show. A few sponsors ultimately did cave to the demands and threats, most notably Kellogg. It was during this time that the AFA hit my radar and I have been following their activities ever since and have been trying to spread the word about how this one group has so much influence over many decision made that affect the rest of our everyday lives. Three years ago, the AFA launched a boycott against WalMart for that corporation's involvement with what the AFA calls the "Homosexual Agenda." WalMart was donating money to a gay rights group and the AFA wasn't happy, so they launched a boycott over the Black Friday weekend. WalMart reported a 3% loss in sales from the same period a year earlier, pulled their support from the group and the AFA dropped the boycott. The AFA had a three year boycott against Disney which they finally dropped after Disney refused to back down. Recently, the AFA pressured the Heinz Corporation to pull an advertisement from British television - yes, they are going global - that featured on the surface what appeared to be a gay couple going through their morning routine with their kids. What the commercial actually depicted was an average, straight family but as a viewer we saw a big, burly New York deli worker because the ad was for some kind of deli style sandwich spread. Heinz wasted no time in caving, pulled the ad and claimed it was only scheduled to run for another week or so anyway. The AFA is now meeting with various worldwide hotel chains and urging them to stop offering pay-per-view adult films in rooms. What someone chooses to do in the privacy of their own hotel room is their own business as far as I'm concerned, as long as it involves consenting adults. The AFA, and other groups who feel they speak for the rest of us, need to be stopped because it is these groups that are destroying the fabric this country was founded on. I monitor the AFA activities and I will be posting blogs about their latest targets and issues, and all I ask is that if you feel the same as I do about how these people are putting our rights in jeopardy, do something about it!
