MY BLOG: LA GLORIA
I'm Gloria and I was just devastated with my first gray hair last year. (It's been colored over now of course.) I talk, work, EAT, run, read, and write a LOT. Wake up yelling. Get up early and stay up late. (Have driven men and friends crazy with that one.) I have a very serious side and a very crazy side, you never know what you'll get...also have many MANY friends whom I love dearly and manage to exasperate daily with my latest adventure or cause. I can be smart and polished and then completely goofy. I am clumsy but won't stop wearing HIGH heels. I have been pulled over by a bicycle cop--WHILE DRIVING A CAR. In keeping with the stupid car stories: I was also angry texting an ex-boyfriend (you know who you are!) and I hit a car in front of me, which then hit the AMBULANCE in front of them. And yes, they were taking someone to the hospital.
I founded and ran a grassroots nonprofit in East Austin for Latina mothers (Latina Mami) for 7 years. Currently I'm on hiatus (if you can count *only* being on the board a hiatus...) and work as a disability advocate. Have co-hosted the “Mamis of Color†radio show on KOOP 91.7 FM for 7 years. Serve on the KOOP board, as well as several other committees/boards in town, mainly related to disability advocacy. Have an almost 9 year old who terrorizes me daily but whom I love endlessly. I was married for over 10 years to Shane, and we are still good friends and co-parent and share joint custody of our sweet boy. **Good friends is not a euphemism for "still physically intimate". As if!
What else? I own and manage rentals in town, also owned a carpet cleaning business that I started at age 20 and ran for 7 years. (Stopped when my son was diagnosed with a disability.) Will probably move back to small business after I go to law school...no, I don’t want to be an attorney, I just want to go! Although I am a bit of a Type A person and am somewhat competitive, I have the experience of being a high school dropout, being raised in a large Mexican family and getting married and having a child at a very young age. [Actually that experience was not much different than the norm: Mexican-American women have the highest birth rate of any other ethnic group, including all other Latinas. That’s not good or bad, it just is. AND THE LECTURE IS STOPPING RIIIIIIIGHT .....NOW!]
Is there anything you need to know about me??? I write and am being published (finally!) this year. My friends call me a MACHA in my personal and professional life. Ahem. I get very angry and work hard to make change but am trying to slow down and relax and FEEL things more. Have a long way to go before I am a truly evolved woman. Will it happen? TIME WILL TELL!
