BIOGRAPHY
Raised on a little farm in the exotic country of Brazil, Reah Fernandes Valente discovered music at an early age. When she was three-years-old, she began playing all of her father’s albums becoming particularly obsessed with Credence Revival, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel. Born to a disco-hopping German fashion model and her father, a Portuguese lawyer by day and DJ by night, Reah was eager to begin playing music. Reah had her first acoustic guitar lesson when she was 9 years old, composed her first song at the age of 10 and later picked up the electric guitar, bass, and drums by the time she was 15 years old.
Unsupportive of his daughter’s interest in developing a music career, Reah’s father wanted her to become a lawyer or entrepreneur like himself. However, Reah was not a rule-abiding straight A student. Although at the top of her class, she spent her time skipping classes, making fun of teachers, getting detentions and suspensions. When she should have been studying, she secretly went to band practices and concerts. In addition to her love for music, one of the most influential figures in Reah's life was her glamorous aunt who lived in Japan. A successful model and entrepreneur who traveled the world, her aunt often brought back stories of travels abroad, world music and a beautiful vision of life outside of Brazil. So, it was with this unquenchable thirst to explore this beautiful world for herself that Reah jumped at her first opportunity to leave home at the age of 16 by signing up for a foreign exchange program in Ohio. It was here that she learned English and joined every band or music group she could find.
By the age of 18, Reah knew that she wanted to explore the world and find the "real" her. Against her father’s wishes, she snuck out of the house with only her passport and $1 in her pocket boarding the first plane to Osaka, Japan; dreaming of new dimensions and the freedom to explore life on her own and to pursue her passion for life & music with her aunt. However, life was not easy. Her aunt refuse to spoil her and instead taught Reah independence which was a tough transition. With no money and no friends, she worked odd jobs to buy food and pay rent. After dedicating herself to learning Japanese, Reah began to model and eventually assumed a management role at her aunt's modeling agency. Then life got crazy! Traveling all over the world, working long hours, and attending late night parties that were always followed by early morning hangovers, Reah was lost.
In June 2002, Reah was destined to pursue her music career so, she shaved her head, grabbed her guitar, and started playing on the streets of Tokyo. Fluent in Japanese, Reah dove into the Japanese music scene. Playing for cover bands, composing songs and writing lyrics. After several months, she met a super-star producer in Tokyo named Sagan Ono who asked her why she didn't get vocal training and start singing her own songs? But the concept of being a singer was completely foreign to Reah as she had always shied away from the limelight. As a kid, Reah used to force her sister to sing while she composed and played the instruments.
A year and a half later in April of 2005, her answer came with the release of her first album "Certain Relativity", which was produced in a small studio in a remote village of Japan. She began playing all over Japan and even had her own radio show. However, Reah soon realized that she needed to move to the US to grow as a musician. Later that year, she moved to New York City underestimating what a cultural shock it would be to move to a big city, Reah was completely unprepared for what was to come. This time she had no family or friends. She couldn't help but fill her head with doubts. She had chosen to move to a completely foreign country leaving the comfortable, quiet and conservative streets of Tokyo for the sleepless, loud and obnoxious roads that define New York. She had to start over again; hitting the clubs and the streets, knocking on doors and receiving rejection wherever she went. To stay involved in music, she started jamming with other bands playing the guitar, bass and drums and continued writing. Until one day she knocked on the door of super-star hip-hop producer Andy "Red Spyda" Thelusma (Eminem, 50-Cent) who saw something special.
Red Spyda introduced Reah to a slew of producers but it was faith, hard work and talent that caught the attention of legendary producers Paul Fox and Dave Cobb (10,000 Maniacs with Natalie Merchant, Sugarcubes with Bjork, Shooter Jennings) in Los Angeles, California. Thirty days later, Reah finished recording 10 tracks that would showcase a more mature, worldly and vastly more secure Reah. Simply put, Reah Valente has a rich musical background, an unwavering commitment to the art of songwriting and music composition, and a voice that lingers long after the last note fades.
