"The band not only refines the Franz Ferdinand-inspired dance rock of its debut, but they also deliver a more dynamic album, incorporating harder-edged alt-rock and lush, mournful ballads."
Offbeat Magazine - Album Review
"If you listen closely, you will find out they follow the path that was first explored by the forefathers of art rock, Roxy Music and The Sparks. [...] this is music that serious music lovers will actually dance to."
Here Comes The Flood
"With a sound that blends post-punk dance rock with pop melodies and unique song structures, The City Life has found a lean, hip rock ’n’ roll niche in a city dominated by funk and jazz."
Offbeat Magazine - Feature Article
"The guitar-driven track, an angular post-punk rocker with happy feet [...] is easily the top horse in the emerging quintet’s impressive stable of restless-leg dance anthems."
blogofneworleans.com
"HOLY SHIT! They are explosive. I am addicted. This band I will not miss if the chance to see them comes."
The Damn Juice
"Hardly slowing to catch its breath, the song will keep its listeners moving and grooving to the addictive guitar riffs for the full three minutes, just long enough to keep you ensnared without losing interest; just as well, because it’s doubtful that you’ll want to be dancing for much longer after the workout this song will give you."
Technique
"De groep brengt het in eigen beheer uit. White Elephant is de single. Een catchy nummer, lekker gezongen door Leo DeJesus."
Alankomaat
“My ultimate goal in writing a song is to make sure that when it’s done, it would be one of my favorite songs, regardless if I wrote it or not”
Where Y'at Magazine - Ones To Watch
Coming off the celebrated release of their hit single “White Elephant,” The City Life is lined up to unleash their highly anticipated sophomore album “Gone Is The World” to audiences both local and abroad on April 4th, 2008. Already acclaimed as “catchy enough to induce insomnia” by Offbeat Magazine , this self-recorded/produced/promoted full-length follow-up to their October 2006 debut “What’s That Sound?” displays the band’s tremendous growth in punch, power, and poignancy. “It took half as long to make and sounds more than twice as good,” says lead vocalist Leo DeJesus about their latest effort, and bassist Aaron Souvinette proclaims that “[the band is] all really happy with the way it sounds.” The City Life will bring in local American roots connoisseurs Les Poissons Rouge to help commemorate the album’s release on Friday, April 4th, 2008 with a two-band bill at Republic in their hometown of New Orleans, LA. Limited tour dates to follow.
On January 26th, 2008, The City Life released “White Elephant,” the infectiously catchy and irresistibly dancy opening track to “Gone Is The World,” on a two-track single CD (B-side included) to help build buzz for the new album. After handing out free CD’s to anyone and everyone who attended their Single Release Party at Carrollton Station in New Orleans, the fivesome quickly became the subject of many conversations. Also, The City Life recently kicked off a weekly video blog series cleverly entitled “TCL’s Gone Is The World Wide Web Weekly Video Blog.” Each delightfully entertaining and subtly informative episode is posted on YouTube as well as on the band’s MySpace site and Facebook profile. These are only the first of many ingredients in The City Life’s home-cooked promotional campaign to spread “Gone Is The World” to as many ears, eyes and hearts as possible.
However, grabbing attention for themselves is not the only thing they are after. On the front lines of the rapidly growing New Orleans indie-rock scene, The City Life hopes to branch out to the rest of America (and the world) and shed some light on what is happening in the rock clubs of their hometown. In an interview for Gambit Weekly’s CUE , when asked about the advantages and disadvantages of a rock band in jazz & blues city, New Orleans native Paul Meany ( Mutemath ) says that “[New Orleans has] a great level of musicianship and groove, [and] that all gets inside of you.” And considering its presence as a water port location, eclectic urban feel, and largely similar mix of cultures, New Orleans can easily remind one of a smaller Big Apple. With monumental indie-rock talents such as Glasgow! , Antenna Inn , and Big Blue Marble all hailing from The Big Easy, the city’s comparable musical versatility can not be denied. Bringing all this out in the open is only one of the things The City Life hopes to achieve with their new album.
